Dear all,

I am wondering whether I could use XOOPS for an intranet portal for staff at my office. The idea is to carry out more communications via the portal instead of via email to:

1) Make it easier for staff to keep track of events and deadlines
2) Cut down on email clutter resulting from large file attachments being sent

Could anyone suggest which modules I would need to use in order to achieve the following?

1) Staff can optionally be subscribed to the calendars of the department(s) that they are in

2) When a post is made on the portal, all subscribed staff of that department receives the post content via email as well (except any file attachments, which staff will be asked to download off the portal)

3) Staff can easily see imminent events/deadlines when they log in to the portal.

Xoops should be perfect for that. You might want to use...

pical (calendar) and newbb (forum)

Getting the notifications to work...you might have to login as each staff person and set their notifications, or you could ask them to do it themselves and hope they get it right.

You might want to use Formulize for some other things if you have custom data-entry applications that your staff should be using (like status reports, vacation request forms, expense logs, etc). Look for it here:

I haven't used pical but gather it would work pretty well for most needs. If you have more custom requirements, you can hook up a Formulize form that has date information in it to a calendar template, so that the entries in the form are drawn on the calendar. That part is still a little experimental, but functional.

Xoops is great for an intranet. You can serve it up on an existing TCPIP network using IIS+Win XP or Apache+Win XP.

One of strengths is it's group management. So, for example you could create a 'sales team' group and allow members of that group access to a different forum than those in the 'accounts dept' group. New forum posts, articles, comments, files for download etc can all be notified to users via private message or email (based on admin settings).

Note that there are currently two XOOPS versions. For the widest choice of modules, I would choose 2.0.13. XOOPS 2.2 is brand new and includes a more advanced private message system, however there are less compatible modules for it at present.
