That would work, too, if you wanted the colors of each block to always remain the same. Check out my site: ARTwire. A block is defined with a different background color many places.

Thank you all for your tips and advice.
I was able to change the background color by going in and adding some html to each block I wanted changed.

this is good enough for me.

here is an example what I added to the block:

<TABLE width="150">
<tr>
<TD style="width:100%; background-color:lightblue">

THEN ALL MY BLOCK CONTENT HERE

</TD>
</TR>
</TABLE>
