I wouldn't have noticed, yet my mum wanted to go to my site.

For a week she has been moaning that on google my site looks funny.

I couldnt understand what she meant, so i asked what she was doing....

she explained she types http://www.wizanda instead of just wizanda.

When i checked, she is right instead of my main page showing it shows.

http://www.wizanda.co.uk/modules/news/backendt.php?topicid=3

Which doesn't load

How can I fix this so instead, it shows my metadata and the proper link?

Have a look you will see what I mean

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=www.wizanda

What do I need to do?

hmmmm - can the robots.txt tell bots not to crawl individual files? Or just directories?

If it can, you could edit the robots.txt in the XOOPS root.

Ahh, google has spidered the XML feed from your news module. Somthing seems to be kinda screwy with it as well. If you view the source, you'll see that the page is, in fact and XML file.

What you may want to do is add rel="nofollow" to the News module's template where it links to the RSS/XML feed. This will prevent search engines from following the link, and thus placing your News feed at the top of their search results.

For now, though, I don't think there's much that can be done until your site is crawled again.

Just goes to show, Google loves fresh content.

To the best of my knowledge, no. Google will honor disallowing file exentions (*.cgi), but not individual files.

Hope this helps.

Which News module do you use? The one that came with XOOPS 2.0.x or the new one available from Hervé?

Not sure if that makes a difference, I don't use either, but I'll need a starting place to answer you a little better.

Should I tell him of what needs changing? or will you?

As presumably other people will end up with this problem also?

Wizanda,

I did some more digging. I don't think this is related to the news module. I checked out your site and I didn't see a link to that URL. Upon further investigation of the file, I saw something that gave a clue as to where the problem could be coming from...

I'm not sure what's up with the backend.userland.com/rss/ link, but the XML is indicating that XOOPS generated the code.

The URL of the page that is having problems is
http://www.wizanda.co.uk/modules/news/backendt.php?topicid=2

The URL of the correct XML feed for your site is
http://www.wizanda.co.uk/backend.php

Which displays properly formatted XML.

As you can see, there is not "t" or query string in the correct XML feed.

Are you using a third party tool to generate XML feeds? Is there a chance that you may have submitted a URL with a typo to some site?

Just looking for clues.

Best Regards,

James

Well acording to my mum, she has always gone to my site that way.

The problem stems from the news module, it is since updating to the last few updates.

Yes you are right about the backend.php, yet that is for XOOPS general feed.

There is a file in the new news module called backendt.php, so It is something faulty with the news module.

Again should I ask Hervé, what could be causing it?

I need to fix it, as me poor mum is concerned I will loose people

Hello,

I don't think that the problem is really coming from the News module. I'm using the module on my personnal website since a long time and I have made the same test that the one you are describing and I don't have the same result.... !!!???

What you can do is to uncheck the option to use RSS feeds per topics in the module's options.

PS : Google is acting very strangley actually....
