How to check content of Smarty-variable?

I try to write in pure Smarty smth. like

if (!empty(var)) {}

in order to don't write block's and page content's decaoration around empty places (as in happens now with empty content in Bizzware's themes)

You can do this:

<{if !empty($var)}>
   ...
<{/if}>
