I strongly advise you to upgrade to the latest version in the 2.0.* branch (2.0.13) for security issues, but upgrading to 2.2 is not necessary unless you want to make use of the new functionalities. Upgrading is easy, go to the download XOOPS page and look up the upgrades. A readme is provided to help you performing the upgrade.

There is nothing very hard with upgrading. But as with anything that file changes take place, things can go wrong. Before you begin any upgrade backup all physical files and the database so you can revert if needed. Make sure to read all documentation included with the upgrade package and understand it fully before starting.

To upgrade from 2.0.12a you will first need to upgrade to 2.0.13, which involves just uploading files to your server.

Once at 2.0.13, use the 2.0.13 to 2.2 patch. Upload the files (remove the install folder, it is not needed). You will then need to follow the instructions in the update.html.
