newbb2 upgrade problems

Well, I've been procrastinating the upgrade of my newbb 1. I have a very active message board with over 12,000 posts and its a scary thing for me...

I ran the update script first per the readme file, then updated the module and it hosed everything.

is there something else I need to do here or am I missing a permission issue somewhere?

Is there a better way, should I switch to CBB?

CBB is the latest version of newbb 2. But after running the update script and updating the newbb 2 module, you need to go into the newbb 2 admin and set permissions for all categories and forums. See these two flash tutorials for an overview:
