I wanted to toss this idea for a module out to the XOOPS community before I developed it any further. I don’t have any real programming skills so I am looking for someone ( or a team) who is willing and able to takes these ideas and create a real, stable & functioning module. It’s not a particularly complex module, I just lack the programming skills to make it myself. :)

I have the ideas sketched out on some notebook paper. The notes include logic flow, and interface designs. Before I commit more time to translating these notes to a more readable format (mock-up in HTML), I would like to know if there is enough interest in a module such as this to warrant further development.

The Timeline Module

Description
This module would allow for an easy-to-use historical timeline to be displayed. The user could view and entire timeline, sort & display by particular subject, search for a keyword(s), search before/after a specific date, or search within a user-specified time period.

The timeline would be displayed in a simple text format in a table with dates, event description and subject listed. A timeline like this allows for the user to narrow their focus on a particular area of study from a larger more complete & comprehensive timeline and create a custom timeline for their studies.

Possible users of this module
Any site that has a need to record & document important dates and events that may need to be refered to later.

Here is a link to the kind of site that would be able to use this module:
http://accad.osu.edu/~waynec/history/timeline.html

*********End description************

If you guys and gals think this module would be something you could either use or would like to develop, please let me know here in this thread. I can go into more detail if there is enough interest. Personally, I could use this module, but it’s not a life-or-death situation. If there is enough need for this module and someone is willing to make it a reality, I’d like to know so we can get the ball rolling.

Like I said before, I don’t think it’s a particularly complex module, I just don’t have the time, or experience to build it.

I'm looking forward to your thoughts and comments.

Retlaw, You could say from this response that it's not a burning requirement. That's not to say the concept is not useful. I think it's unique and quite specialised. I'm not sure about this, but I think there is a project underway at http://dev.xoops.org that may be similar to what you are looking for.

I'll take a look and post back

[edit] I looked through the complete list of projects and saw nothing suitable. Sorry to raise your hopes.

If you are serious about developing such a module, it may be easier to find an existing script and port it into xoops. Even better, find a postnuke script or similar. Then start a project at the devs site yourself. You maybe able to canvass some more interest there.

Good luck, Richard

Yeah it doesn't look like there's much need for this kind of module outside of my site. lol.

I'd port it or create it myself except I have zero programming experience and even less time to learn how to program. I guess for now I'll just separate the timeline subjects into individual lists and hard code them. oh well.

Just thought of your post here when I saw this Ephemerides module released today.

Thanks Carnuke. :)

I checked it out. It's kinda what I was looking for, but from what I could see on his site (it's kind of confusing) It's just a "on this day" kind of mod. I was looking for more of a research/searchable/library kind of module. Something the users could interact with.

Thanks for showing me that one though, that site map mod could be useful. :)

sorry 'bout the late response. Been super duper busy.
