I am finding my site

http://www.macmend.com/forum

slow to load.

I don't really know how to use the cache with modules and blocks and so on, can anyone advise me as to whats best.

I noted elsewhere if you set the cache and then look at an admin page that is the page that is cached and then the user sees the admin page...is this true?

1) Your site does not appear to be accessible?

2) Best way to cache is module wide caching. Go to Sys Admin\ Preferences and then at the bottom all your modules are listed. Cache them for as long as you consider necessary - generally the longer the better. What happens then is that when a user visits for the first time everything has to be loaded, so it may still be slow. However, every page they visit after that and every time they return to your site, the cached modules will just load straight away.

3) Downside - they may not see something that you have put on the site (like a news article) straight away. If you've cached a News block for 5 hours they might not see it until 5 hours after you post it, potentially. That said, all the new visitors, or the visitors who visited more than 5 hours ago, will see it straight away. You see?

In other words, unless your site has massive traffic (like hundreds an hour) go for a cache of at least a few hours, if not a few days. Some of my modules (like the FAQ) are cached for a week.

You can also cache individual blocks (instead of entire modules) by editing each block (in System Admin\Blocks) and selecting the cache time.Same rules apply.

Laslty, reduce your graphics sizes as much as possible. Aim for less than 7 or 8 Kb if possible. Get rid of any stats modules you may have. I increased loading times by about 50% by getting rid of my stats counter. I just rely on my web host counter now which is not as detailed but does the job.

thanks for that info, the site is up now, a glitch on the host...actually seems to run faster (maybe it was partly the host server!?)

I have cached everything as well

Yeah, seems pretty quick to me (on a 1.1Mbs Broadband) - about 2 or 3 seconds. I'd try to reduce the size of your apple graphic a bit - it's 17Kb - I'd try to make it 7 or 8 like the others. Other than that, it seems OK.
