windows vs linux


Does anyone know the market share of these two operating systems in regard to servers online.
Im thinking linux is bigger but I maybe wrong.

That just shows webserver usage doesn't it? You can run Apache on a Windows server which is done quite a lot, no doubting apache is the most popular though. The fact that getting your hands on a copy of Microsofts IIS 6 webserver (legally) will cost you a minimum of several hundred dollars for the functionally restricted Web Server edition (full blown Windows 2003 Server with IIS 6 will cost you well over $1000), and apache is free of charge, it makes it a pretty clear choice for most.

Personally, I hate micorsoft, besides I've always heard Linux is safer and more protected against viruses, isn't it?

Up until Windows 2003 Server I would have said yes as the default install of IIS was pretty lax security wise (everything on by default). But now IIS 6 the default is everything off making it much more secure out of the box than previous versions. As for specific exploits I'd say there are more directed at Microsoft, and they are definately made more public, but *nix still has a lot out there as well. End of the day I think security is more about the skills/awareness of the person running the given website than the actual OS/Webserver being used.
