Modules repositorty listing: confused by terminology

Sometimes modules in the repository are listed as:

Platform: XOOPS 2.0

or

Platform: Unix

or

Platform: Windows

It is very confusing. What does this information actually mean?

Yep, can see how that is confusing. Some modules might depend on external scripts/programs to gather data, in these rare cases these modules then become platform dependent. PHP however is very portable, and as long as the webserver you are using is configured to process PHP then there should be no reason why you can use any purely PHP module on any operating system.

Thanks for your reply. I notice that most modules are either for UNIX or windows. Seems to be the rule rather than the exception... suppose i'll try them and see!!!

i guess it all depends on who submitted them and whether they set it right b4 submitting.. most of the modules will work on both windows and unix..

i think those platform definitions are more for those sites that have a downloads section where people can actually submit files.. such as winzip (windows) or mailman (linux) or any other software that the site submits to it's download section..

with regards to xoops.org i would tend to ignore those that say unix or windows especially if it's a module you're downoading, as they are php based etc and work with xoops, so are not really platform dependant.. module submitters should really use the XOOPS 2.0 or whatever XOOPS version for their platform..

Thanks for your help. Yeah, i thought it was indpendant too, hence worried and confused when i was the specification. Glad it's not an issue.
