Asking intelligent questions, please try to be more specific

Is it just me or do others find topics like Argh! and Help Me! annoying.

I don't want to give specific examples because I don't want anyone to think I am picking on them in person.

Also I realise that many members first language is not English and I do make allowance for this.

But: since I subcribed to auto notify for this forum I am getting loads of notifications the title of which frankly are meaningless.

I have not been here that long and I don't know that much but I do like to help out where I can and I do like to know what threads have been started without loging in 10 times a day.

However I just don't need this meaningless stuff in my inbox and am thinking of turning auto notify off.

Please try to remember the old saying, "Ask a silly question, get a silly answer".

NUff Said, I agree. And maybe the search function is here for a reason too. Lots of questions are being asked without trying to find answers first.

the notification in XOOPS is very customizable. you can/must subscribe to threads or forums? that you see some amazing and usefull post and you want follow it. so choose notifications is an important and maybe hard task

Thanks for the advice. Nice web site, your use of images/backgrounds is most impressive! I only wish I could read the Persian Script.

What would be the most appropriate and acceptable format to ask for help?

1. First, search for your question and for the possible answers.

2. Perform searches on Xoops, Google, or code developers website.

3. Helpful Search Terms:
module name (eg. mylinks), function name (eg. add category), problem name (eg. blank page), or bits of code (eg. $modversion['tables'),..

4. Double check the XOOPS FAQ for your question or the possible answers.

Important for others to identify your post.
5. Proceed to forums,
Title: module/function name, problem summary, conclusion (eg. bug report, bugfix, please help, fixed,..)

This is all detailed in the top page of the FAQ section. We have taken great pains to make it as clear as possible when to post, how to post and how to get answers WITHOUT posting.

If users jump straight in without looking first, what more can we do.

This is not a kindergarten, we cant stick HOW TO GET HELP notices everywhere.

If you wasted your time checking my posts, you would see at least 50% of them point back to the FAQ section for answers

I agree with Carnuke here - it is a teaching and learning thing. If we respond to vague posts with a direct answer they will keep appearing - you are basically allowing them. However, if you reposnd to a vague post with

1. Check FAQ
2. Read the Documentation links on the left
3. Use the search function on the forums

you are directing them to where they can find the answers for themselves.

The XOOPS docs team is working on a new doc site with a specific link to all the different types of info available. When this is up I will respond with please go to (url) and you will find the answer there.

It is a matter of us training the community to be more independent and use their own skills to find an answer or ask a question effectively if they want a direct response.

I also ask anyone who obviously has english as a second language difficulties to nominate their primary language in their post - that way someone who speaks their language may be able to help them.

Stay tuned - the new doc site is on it's way!

Well thanks to all who responded to the thread because at the very least I got to bookmark some very nice sites which show what can be achieved.

Ironically I AM going to turn auto notify off now so I can RTM in peace and try and work out how you guys did some of that stuff.

Actually, I sympathise with that. Already posted a request for the title of the forum thread to be included in the auto-notify message so we can see what's going on. In a busy thread it is very difficult to manage the auto-notify PMs from the forums at present, IMHO.
Of course, if we had a 'view new posts' button...
And if the 'random answer' block was re-instated, (which I thought was really eye-catching) perhaps more people would be drawn to the FAQ in the first place?.
