I'm pretty certain the news 1.2.1 module can do what you're looking for.

In the preferences of the news module, find 'columns' - you should be able to select the number of columns you want to use to display your news.

No, it's below the preference where you select whether to display the author's username or real name in articles - and above Number of new articles to display in admin area.
