How do I manage to embed html in a forum post?

I found the article about "Embed HTML in news item" https://xoops.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=24839&forum=27&post_id=110137#forumpost110137 and just copy/paste of sourcecode between table tags works allright. But I dont get this managed in a forum post ....

Just to be sure it is no the configuration of my forum, I will try to post html here. If it doesnot work, I wonder if posting html is supported in newbb 2.0?

I'm not an expert by no means but will try to help.

In your administration..pass your mouse over the forums button and click on edit forums. In each forum you create there is a radio button that says allow HTML. I haven't tried it but I believe this will allow you to use HTML code in your posts.

Hi patsrule,

thanks for your hint, I changed forum to "allow html" and now I can insert html just fine.

Little problems remain like limitation to 65535 characters for input in textbox and some layout problems:

Quote:
XOOPS insert in the beginning of all the content a lot of empty space, which makes my content go down in the window and not being seen right from the beginning.

which is discussed here (only referrring to wfsection):
https://xoops.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=2315&forum=7

I will post my question there.

This is what my html insert looks now with the text beginning way down below:
http://66.195.17.52/~fporg/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=1166&forum=8

thanks asche

PS: ... just because I am so thrilled to searching and "building categories" with http://www.anyfinder.de, I post two searches referring to 65535 character limitation and wfsection hack -> maybe somebody knows a good hack for modules news and forum, that solve html-layout problems.

Hi asche, I got your PM.
First, blank lines appear because XOOPS converts new lines in code to new lines in HTML (
tags), so to avoid that you'd have to put all your HTML in a single line... but there are online tools to do that for you, try html compress at Google or let us know if you need help with one.

Regarding the 65kb limit, I'll try to find where it comes from

PS: you can change your long links above to a (url=yourlinkhere)text(/url) format, using [ and ] instead of ( and )

Man, I hate when I lose a long post... I've learned to avoid session time-outs but a browser crash hit me

Anyway, here's what's important:

Check the wiki
Access you MySQL DB (using phpMyAdmin probably) and change the field type of post_text in the bb_posts_text table from TEXT to MEDIUMTEXT
No other change required as far as I could find, please test it and report back
Could create a security problem because MEDIUMTEXT allows 16MB of storage, so a hardcoded limit like the one Dave suggested (see the wiki) would be good, but I don't have time to try to make it... hopefully someone can help.

Free HTML compressors, here too. Good luck!

Hi ajaxbr,

thanks a lot for your hints concerning "html compress" and "MEDIUMTEXT".

I had a first try and still have problems with the results.

1. original embedded html
org html
... has blanks on the first lines, which I want to get rid of

2. html after compress
http://66.195.17.52/~fporg/html/modules/news/article.php?storyid=1030
... still has blanks on the first lines and now displays urls ... a bit messed up after compression?

So I will keep on practicing to get rid of the blanks without changing anything else.

I will try out "MEDIUMTEXT" later ..... thanks asche

PS: ... dont laugh, but I usally copy long text before submitting to avoid writing twice .... it is more fun in the morning doing it right the first time.

hi ajaxbr,

I changed the field to mediumtext, but I still get error message like:

Microsoft Internet Explorer
Your news is too long
allowed maximum length: 65535

if you have more suggestions I'd be happy ... many of the html-text I rob in the web are long

PS: The error described above seems to be solved by switching tool from "HTML Compress" (very good tool, but doesnot tolerate bad html) to "Absolute HTML Compressor" (thats a great freeware link from ajaxbr). I wanted to put this info to the erors described in posting above, but I can only edit my last posting?

sorry for this inflation of my postings, after session timeout and relogin I cant even edit my latest post ....
... but happy about ajaxbr's link I want to post my "link of the day": http://download.copernic.agentland.com/cgi-bin/relocation.cgi?http://download.copernic.agentland.com/ (I thought there is no trial version for professional edition of copernic, but yesterday night, I found it ... much better than google ... search for "copernicagentprotrial.exe" returns more than hits, google only 1 .... best thing you can sort by date modified, track changes ....)

I guess I found it...
open /include/xoops.js and /include/xoopsjs.php, find the line var maxchars = 65535; in both and replace with a higher value.

hi ajaxbr,

thanks for your info, increased maxchars and now it is fine.

I have a new qestion concerning max_size, maybe you know?
I couldnot reimport my database with sql script, because the sql-window is restricted to (Max: 51,200KB).

Are there any database tools which can import much bigger db (funny thing I want to replace a domainname in all of the tables and then reimport).

greetings to the sunny south

asche
