Replacing the news module

This question was originally posted in the "Beginner's Corner" forum, but since I got no replies there I'll hope someone here is able to answer it.

I would like to replace the standard news module with the altern8news module, and wonder if it's straightforward to install it in the modules/news folder (and not the modules/altern8news), since many themes expect to find the news-module here?

most likely it will cause problems as the directory name is probably used in the module code for url's, includes etc.
