Can you give us a bit of background to this? Was this a working site, or is it a fresh install? Have any changes been made to the server our your DNS recently?

Check your password that is stored in mainfile.php. It sounds as though XOOPS is detecting your database but can't access it due to either a permission or password problem. Check for anything else in their that looks out of the ordinary. If all seems to be OK contact your web host - they may have moved it or done some maintenance without telling you.

I had this same problem once, and it was because the password on my database was different to what I had put in mainfile.php (which it got during the setup phase).

Ted is right here, if any of you database connection details (username, password, database name, etc) in mainfile.php are incorrect then XOOPS won't work.
