Does anyone have any idea - what this error message means?

Error [Xoops]: Unable to connect to database in file class/database/databasefactory.php line 34

I was restoring a backup copy of MySQL database and my home directory. Now I am getting this error message? Does anyone have any ideas?

Well, the error does say 'can't connect to database', so make sure that the restored mainfile.php has all the correct settings for your database.

in the phpmain file - is the section called.

//database password -

"is that the actual password in plain text or is it encrypted in some manner."

It's the actual password in plain text.

That message will also appear if your host is having problems with MySQL

I have been getting this error many times in the past few days. In addition to all the above senior leader's answers, one of the thing I was facing is the Server side database overload. You have no control over that, you just have to wait it out.

If you have an administration interface to your site (Cpanel, Hsphere etc.) you can try to connect to the database that way and see if it is actually connectable - then double-check the information in the database.

If the database user and/or password is wrong, you usually get a different error message, so the host and database name is the first priority to check.
