If you do not want the menu item at all, you can hide it by giving it "weight" zero in system admin -> modules

Yes it does look better. But the avatar box is still crowded by the quote box. Your fix is on the right track though. Could you share the fix with us? I believe all using this version of newbb could benefit from it.
