My advanced search page shows all the categories like News, Forum, etc but none of these are checked by default to be included in the search. Where can I see these? I have looked in all of the configuration and templates.

the script that controls this is /include/searchform.php and in the few minutes I spent looking at that script, I did not see a simple way to mark them all checked.

This is interesting, when I goto xoops/search.php for the advanced search none of the checkmarks are checked. However when I do a search, it searches all the modules and actually shows the checkmarks checked with matching results. So by default it does look they are checked but there's a bug that doesn't check them when the initial search.php is generated?

I wouldn't consider it a bug, rather a misleading feature. More than likely the code checks if none of the modules are selected, and if so, searches all of them
