Easiest way to import avatars?

Could someone please give me a simple step-by-step walkthough on how to import a bunch of avatar images (100 or so)? I presume I'll need to make a list of them in some ascii format and import them into mySQL through some sort of magic.

Is there a drawback to having a lot of avatar images (many times more than my userbase would ever use but enough that they could all be unique and change them at will)?

Worked like a charm. Thank you VERY much for making such a simple task easy to perform. I hope this or something similiar gets added to the core eventually.
