djsckizo, I am using totalchoicehosting and was generally okay in the past. Still desperate on the situation...

From my understanding, software firewalls DO create issues with users registering & logging in. The most notorious offenders are Norton Internet Firewall & McAffee's Firewall. There have been numerous posts in these forums on this issue in the past.

I have a new discovery that when I changed the language option inside "config" table to "english" (I was building a Traditional Chinese site, which is "tchinese" in the db), the login works again without a problem. But when I changed it back to "tchinese", no chance to login again.

Is this a compatibility issue for XOOPS , or my host?

Sounds like a problem with the language files. You can look around for updated language packs, or re-upload a fresh copy of whatever you have on hand in case something happened during the original file transfer. I'm only guessing right now, but thats a first step I would take based on your recent discovery.

Sorry I can not be much help as I have the same exact issue. But it happened to me after updating my apache from httpd-2.0.40-21 to 2.0.40-21.9, MySQL from 3.23.54 to 3.23.54 and php from php-4.2.2-17 to 4.2.2-17.2 so I have feeling my problem could lay with a one of those being updated and there is a good chance your hosting company did upgrade as well.
