Is there anyway I can play with XOOPS offline on my own PC at home, instead of having to upload my changes all the time to see how they'd look.

You can install a local webserver like XAMP. Upload files to htdocs directory and use the path http://localhost/xxxx on your browser.

Not really sure what I'm doing, but think I've installed it right and put the files in the right directory but I get this error.

XOOPS path check: Script is not inside XOOPS_ROOT_PATH and cannot run.

Did you create the database and run the XOOPS install?

Nope I just took everything from
http://www.lifensoulonline.co.uk/testing

and stuck it in the directory. Thought that would work.

You would then need to modify the physical path, virtual path and database details in the mainfile and do a migration of the database if you want to keep what you have done in the server. Otherwise just create a new database in your webserver and run the XOOPS install.

Sounds complicated. I just did a test and copied http://www.lifensoulonline.co.uk/testing over to http://www.theskepticexpress.com/testing and that brought up the same error.

I take it that means I have to install Xoop and start again :( would be nice to be able to just copy over as easy as I was attempting to do aslong as the directory structure stays the same.

Copying from one server to another works, provided that you edit mainfile.php as snow77 said.

I have the same XOOPS files and database in seven different places (three internet servers running Linux, and two workstations dual-booting Linux and Windows), and the only thing that's different is mainfile.php.

These are the parameters that potentially need to be changed:

XOOPS_ROOT_PATH
XOOPS_URL
XOOPS_DB_PREFIX
XOOPS_DB_HOST
XOOPS_DB_USER
XOOPS_DB_PASS
XOOPS_DB_NAME

You can also avoid that error by changing the value of XOOPS_CHECK_PATH from '1' to '0', at the risk of somewhat reducing security. But security isn't really an issue when running XOOPS on your computer, assuming that it's not accessible to the internet.
