Could not connect to the database server

Hello.

I'm pretty new to CMS's and Xoops, so sorry for any dumb questions.

I just tried to install XOOPS on the server of my ISP. Everything went well till the last installation-screen, saying "Could not connect to the database server". Now, i've installed 2 CMS's before on the same server: Exponent and Mambo. Exponent gave me no trouble. Mambo gave an error eventually about not being able to connect to the MySQL-database ("The password and username provided are incorrect") > similar to Xoops? I have posted a question about it in the Mambo-forums, but decided not to wait ... that's when i ran into Xoops.

The server i'm running on uses the following:

MySql: 4.0.18 (InnoDb not supported).
Apache: 1.3.31
Perl: 5.005
PHP: 5
GD-lib: 2.0
Curl-lib: 7.10.5

Anyone have an idea of what might be the problem. My MySQL-login-data are ok as far as i know: Exponent had no trouble with them. Maybe it's something with the server, but i do not have the knowledge to find out what that might be...

Thanks,

Raoul.

to do your install you would of had to connect to db, so maybe it just timed out.

I just found out XOOPS is not creating tables in the database... Any ideas why that might occur?

I ran into this problem as well this evening. I am attempting to install XOOPS on my ISP site.

The install went fine until the step where it attempts to connect to the datbase.

I suspect my ISP has not correctly turned on MySQL for my account.

I wonder if your problem (and mine) could be a php connect error and we need to have an additional php package installed?

I will post here when I figure it out.

Thanks!

Update...

Well, my ISP installed MySQL for me. I was able to command line access MySQL and add the database for XOOPS and a user via the MySQL command line interface.

I am still having difficulty in the database connect step of the installation. I suspect XOOPS is looking for the datbase as a service or on a particular path and can't find it to connect to it.

If anyone has any help on this, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am using XOOPS 2 (2.0.9), MySQL 3.23.33, php 4+.

I am real close on this. Your help is greatly appreciated!!!

Regards from Ohio.

during install your need to be able to write to mainfile and the install prompts you for db connection info. check with your isp

I've had the same problem during XOOPS install and configuration:
Could not connect to the database server.

I started using PHP5, Apache 2, MySql 4, XOOPS 2.0.9.2. and had no problems with Xoops. But, then I had problems getting xcGallery and XoopsGallery to work, so I downgraded PHP to PHP4.
PHP4 immediately manifested the "Could not connect to the database server" error from Xoops. So you can fix that error by going to PHP5. (Note: MySql is built into PHP4, but in PHP5 you must activate it. See
http://www.thriftyplaces.com/html/php_ini.html)
So, you can fix the database connection problem by going to PHP5, but then PHP5 might cause problems with other modules.
I, too, am still looking for the fix to make XOOPS connect to the database using PHP4.

Ok, this is driving me mad...

Win 2003 c/w IIS
MySQL 4.1.12
PHP 5.0.4 also tried 4.3.11
XOOPS 2.0.10 also tried 2.1.1

I can connect to my db using MySQL Admin 1.0.20 and create an empty schema

I can run 'mysql' at DOS prompt to run the .sql scripts provided with XOOPS to create tables and load inital data.

I've tried using the root user and a new user to initialize the installation from XOOPS but all I get is:

"Could not connect to the database server"

I'm at my whits end...

Helppppp

Try the test script I posted here, and see if it works.
