XOOPS 2.0.2, module "xoopsheadline":

My headlines block was here a few hours ago, now it's gone. No changes were made that should have affected this.

The block is set to "visible" in "top page." (It's set to display at top right) All users and groups have rights to access the Headlines module as well as the Headlines block.

The news site I'm trying to display in the headlines block is set up correctly, "Display in Block" is checked and cache time is 1 hour. /cache has 777 permissions.

The URL for the XML/RSS file is valid.

All this have I checked, but it's as if the block doesn't even exist!! What am I overlooking?

Thanks,

Nick

Koudanshi has done a great job, no doubts there. But the changes to the XOOPS core, esp. the user management, required by his module are far from ideal.

Any mods to newBB may also require changes to the XOOPS core, but would be far fewer and would be (I presume) more likely to be accepted by XOOPS devs as part of the XOOPS "canon" of modules.

I lead a university web development team that is working on developing some modules for XOOPS that will turn it into an effective Learning Management System (LMS). One major need is a more feature-filled BB.

If anyone wanted to undertake adding features to newBB while attempting to modify the core as little as possible, I would certainly be willing to contribute some of my staff's (of 3, we're a university, don't get too big of an idea ) time to the development.

I believe that most people are looking at this somewhat from the wrong direction...

XOOPS will only create trouble for itself by making future developments of one of its key modules (newBB) rely on future updates by third parties like phpBB, Invision, etc.

I would understand this line of thinking (that is, "chuck newBB and replace it with a more feature-filled BB") if newBB were grossly inferior or filled with bugs. It is not. It only lacks a few key features, and it actually has some very nice features that I haven't seen on many other BB's (like Threaded view on posts).

It seems to me (no disrespect to Koudanshi intended) that rather than focusing on hacking XOOPS to be compatible with 3rd party BB's, which creates many problems, especially when either XOOPS or the 3rd party releases a new version, we should focus our efforts on adding needed features to newBB.

The devs have clearly stated that their (rightful) first priority is the XOOPS core, not the modules. I agree with this 100%. By adding to newBB rather than hacking and splicing other BB's, we can help create something that may actually be useful to the XOOPS devs, since they have precious little time to tinker with individual modules.

In other words, we help bring newBB up to speed (not that I think it needs much, mind you) so that they don't have to.
