Looking for a Smarty Tag...or help with inbox link

I removed the default user and main menus and replaced them with a block from the myMenu module so that I could have custom internal links and remove some of the options my users don't need.

The downside to this is that when a user has a waiting private message there is no indication in the menu. I would like to be able to have the number of messages waiting be displayed beside the link to their inbox, or to bold the inbox menu item when the message is waiting. My feeling is is that there is a Smarty tag out there that will do this for me.

Alternatively, if there was a way to add another block whose only purpose was to inform of inbox status, that would be fine too.

All ideas on this appreciated.

Thanks all for the help. WF-Downloads and myMenu are working out really well for me. The site is looking good and my users are satisfied. Great community here!

Help with images in the forums

I'm set up and running now, and some of my users are posting images in the forums (CBB 3.0) via uploads to my server. That's OK by me, I want them to be able to do that. I know I can limit the files size in the forum description. However, is there any way I specify the max dimensions of the image? For example, I would like to be able to limit images to a max size of 800x800.

While investigating this, I also found options within the forum preferences for Max Image Width to create thumbnails. It was a little confusing, but this is how I think it works:

-The idea is to replace the image with a thumbnail if the image is over some size you specify. This way, a lot of images won't expand the forums too much.
-However, if the images are really big, the thumbnails will look dumb, so there is a maximum size for which thumbnails will be made.

Do I have it right?

Finally, in the Misc. Tools section I see a link called Images, and this section talks about the XOOPS "Image Manager". What is this? I don't see any other config options for the image manager in any other menus, nor do I see any blocks that use it. It obviously isn't related to the forum image upload as right now it says only webmasters may upload images, but my registered users are able to do so.

Any light on this subject would be appreciated.

Need Module Recommendations

Hi all. I am trying to save myself from trying every module under the sun. If you could give me some recommendations I would really appreciated it.

a) A module for documents. Allow a certain user group to upload files (perhaps in categories, but not required) and allow other group(s) to access and download them.

b) Something to allow me to make changes to the main menu. I would like to have only one menu box and it should be able to link to the normal XOOPS content (Messaging, News, Forums, etc..) as well as links I make for specific places within XOOPS such as a particular forum topic.

c) A module for static web pages. There's a lot to choose from and it's a bit overwhelming. Basically I just need a couple of pages to post some basic information and I would like to be able to add these to the menu block I mentioned in (b)

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

I can't tell if I don't know what setting to change or if the feature is simply unavailable. Is there any way with the most recent version of News to put the topics in the left-column menu? For example:

News
--Site News
--Reunion News
--Sports Results

Ideas?

[Edit: Ignore the question. I had a bad install and the option I originally thought would do this (Publish this topic as a sub menu) works now. Thanks anyway!

New User Tweaking CBB templates

OK, I have a blank screen...nah just kidding. :) I installed CBB 2.32 in a clean install of XOOPS 2.2.3 and had a few issues. Here's some answers you'll probably ask me along the way seeing as I'm a noob to XOOPS and this is my first post:

a) I'm using the XMT theme.
b) "Update module template .html files from themes/your theme/templates directory?" is set to yes
c) When I make changes and the results aren't visible, I generally clear my browser's cache and delete all files in the templates_c directory.
d) I made a copy of the default template to work with and called it "edited". I set this template as the "Default Template Set".
e) The reason I'm editing templates at all was to remove some of the user information on the forums, ie: date joined. It was a little too cluttered for me and there's no option to turn that off.

Here's my questions:

1) Where do templates live? Once I made a copy of the default template I couldn't find a directory called "edited" within the XOOPS directory anywhere.

2) After I installed CBB (newbb?) I looked in the templates for the default template set for CBB. No problems. When I look at the same set for the "edited" templates I see four yellow entries that weren't in the default set:

newbb.css
newbb_menu_click.css
newbb_menu_hover.css
newbb_viewpost_list.html

Why are these here? More importantly, why are they here without any corresponding mention in the default template set? They all have an option beside them marked generate. Should I generate them?

3) In an effort to make a change to the template [see (e) above] I found the file I was looking for: newbb_thread.html. I edited the specific file from the "edited" template set copy that I had made earlier(d). I was able to remove the code that displays the date joined. I updated the template, and took all the actions in (c). No changes ever displayed. After multiple attempts, I finally found the file newbb_thread.html in \htdocs\xoops\modules\newbb\templates and opened it. There were no changes. So, I made the changes in Notepad and they showed up in Firefox. What am I doing wrong? I had thought I was doing it the "right" way to edit from within XOOPS, but I couldn't make it work!

4) CBB came with a file called newbb.css, and it didn't look like it belonged in the newbb path. What am I supossed to do with it? There is certainly a relation to (1).

All help is appreciated. I'm very thankful there is such a supportive community out there to help new XOOPS users.
