I am the somewhat unwilling volunteer web-mistress for 6 (and counting) Xoops-based, not-for-profit, community websites.

I am only slightly more technical than my dogs (though they are brighter than average, I must say.)

Regardless, I have cursed and stumbled my way through creating and maintining these sites over the last 6-months. However, the memory of an unrecoverable "white-screen-of-death" event persists in my list of worries.

I would like to negotiate a resonable fee for someone with demonstrated expertise to review the settings of at least 3 of my more critical sites. I want to ensure that they are properly set-up and as secure as possible. I would like to think it it only a few hours work. If interested, please send a private email. I will respond promptly.

Regards, Debbie

This isn't a XOOPS module, per se. But it is an excellent Open Source CBT-type SW package for training, policies & procedures, etc. The development team site is:Moodle. You can also read about it on SourceForge.

I forgot to mention that I am just a volunteer (or volunteered) web-mistress......doing any of these sites was not exactly by choice...

Just had the same problem with XOOPS path, applied the change to Xoops_CHECK_path as suggested...everything fine! Waiting to hear from host. THANKS!!

Don't panic...

Manually edit mainfile.php and change this line:
define('XOOPS_CHECK_PATH''1');

so XOOPS_CHECK_PATH is set to O...

However, it's strange this did appear "like this"... Maybe you should check XOOPS_ROOT_PATH and ensure its value is good (if it suddenly broke, it's more likely that your hosting company changed its servers configuration and that you should update XOOPS_ROOT_PATH to reflect you new installation path).

Thanks to all of you. Got the same problem too and it solved now. Terima kasih...

Thank you, jdseymour.
This was actually the first remediation I attempted - to no avail. I was quite serious about reading every related post back to 2003 and attempting all pertinent "fixes". Sadly, nothing helped.
I can re-build the site, but I do wish someone more skilled and knowledgable than I could do due diligence in identifying the root cause(s).
This has happened to several (many?) users...one day "poof" no site, no reason, multiple supposed "fixes". Ah well....enough whining.

Two key questions:
I am rebuilding this site from scratch. Though I have a back-up copy, I have to assume something is fundamentally wrong with it.
Can I/should I port over the data - specifically my FAQ's? If so, how <grin>...
Are there any diagnostic utilities or proactive analytics that I can do to prevent this from happening to my other 3 sites?

Thank you again, I've noticed that you are always very helpful and responsive.

Regards,

Debbie

Yes, I would rather not post it. May I email it?

The story is an old and familiar one: on a dark and stormy night, the previously steady site suffers a white-out. None of the Recovery options for de-bug provide info. Preferences are gone (the only choice is "ok"). Culling through the Forum back to 2003 gives a multitude of "solutions": gzip, sesion-expired, number of users, editing cache in main.php, etc, etc. I checked, repaied, and optimized my dbase. I emptied tables....I tried them all. My site is dead.

Xoops: 2.0.13
SQL 4.0.24
Apache 1.3.33
PHP 4.3.9

I suppose the good news is that I wasn't going live for a few weeks; the bad news is that I have 3 other sites. When will they suffer the same permanent, fatal error. What did my poor little site do to deserve a death sentence?

I'm just an amateur who maintains webs for my church and 3 other local charities. I loved Xoops, now I am scared that I made a bad choice.

Regards,

Debbie
