Hey guys, i dont have an SMTP on my server so is there a hack where it can auto-activate the registered accounts right away ?

I think the theme that i switched to crashed my site or the news module went bad. What do i do ?

I have read the Doc's and went to tutorial sites.
I want to have the 4thefort theme as my page.
When i go to template in the admin menu and upload it from this computer as the .tar.gz file that it specifies. Then i generate it.
When i go back to preferences-> General Settings and in the default theme, its not there. It's not a selectable theme either.
Its under the default template set but when i choose it and apply, the page hasnt change to the theme.
I'm just confused and i dont understand. Could somebody clarify this please?

Checking file and directory permissions..
Directory uploads/ is NOT writable.
Directory cache/ is NOT writable.
Directory templates_c/ is NOT writable.
File mainfile.php is NOT writable
After i had a problem with apache and it wouldnt let me into the htdocs folder, i fixed it by doing
#cd /var/www/localhost
#chmod -R 774 htdocs
Now it wont let me have permission to write...
arghhhh
