I'm seeing such a setting in System Admin - Preferences - General Settings for comments, but not for forum posts. Am I perhaps overlooking it?

I'm sort of looking for the same thing. I'd like to display summaries of 1 or more news articles on my top page. For instance, the xoops.org page appears to have the summary of a news story on it, in the center. Which block is that? Also, I like the way the XOOPS page has the category icons with news article headlines (center column, below the news story). How is that accomplished?

You can configure which pages blocks are visible on, so you could make it so that none of your right column blocks are visible on the forums, thus making your form considerably wider.
