sorry answered my own question.

its $smarty.server.PHP_SELF ... pretty slick i can get a hold of all the GET, POST, SERVER, etc. variables from smarty...

however if somebody knows of a XOOPS variable, that might be easier to use

say i want to set up a menu so that the menu item of the current page has a different background than other menu items within a smarty template... is there a way, a XOOPS variable or maybe even a smarty variable?
thanks.

since upgrading to 2.2 i lost my site info block with the recommend us link in it. this isn't a big deal as i never really liked that link placed there. what i want to do is put a recommend us link at the bottom of the main menu, but, if i remember correctly, the original recommend us link in 2.0 was a block variable (like $block.recommendlink or something) of the site info block, and looking through the directory tree, i don't see anything like recommend.php or whatever to link to directly. So how can i do this?

what version of php are you running? if you are running 4.4 or greater, try rolling back to 4.3.x...
just a guess, but i had weird object/class problems like this with other scripts in 4.4.0.

I've never installed apache/mysql/php on windoze before (would that be called a wamp server?... hehehe) but i'm willing to bet apache wasn't compiled with php support and there is no LoadModule line in your httpd.conf file for it. This is the load module line in my conf file...

LoadModule php4_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp4.so

there should be a whole section in your conf file of LoadModule lines so check there. obviously this example is on a Linux platform so the path to the .so file would be different on your setup.

hope that helps.

***EDIT***
obviously we are running different versions of php as well so adjust that as necessary as well.

i suppose i should explain that why i post it in here is that just before it started behaving like this, i changed theme and template back to default... i should also explain that i am using XOOPS 2.2.1 with php 4.3.10 and apache 1.3.33 and MySQL 4.1 (i think). with debug on i can switch back and forth between themes and templates (i only have the defaults and my personal custom) without error or problem.

i'm getting the whitescreen issue, but when I turn on any kind of debugging in admin.php or recovery.php (thanks for adding that, btw), i am getting no errors, but as soon as i turn off debugging, whitescreen on both front and back ends. weird. i've checked both apache and MySQL logs, too with nothing to report there. not a huge issue, since it works fine with debugging on, but it is curious. any ideas?
