Hey Xoops Community,

I've used xoops for many years now, and just recently my users have complained that, when creating categories in myalbum-P or events in Event, their text gets randon code appended to the end….

Enter : 2010

Becomes : 01001!)+a1ь` summary!a01!@)+a1

It's happening in a number of modules, but not within xoops itself, say in the comments fields.

I'm now running 2.4.5 and php 5.3.3

Anyone had a similar problem?

Daniel

If you would like some help with a custom theme, just let me know. I would be happy to help.

Many thanks, I may take you up on that. I have a meeting on Wednesday evening - 25th April - to discuss changes to the site. I'm going to hold off any major changes until then. I've never been happy with the log-in / register block, it's not right.

UPDATE: The professional web designer has decided not to continue playing for the band. I seem to recall svaha had something to say on that matter:

Aimlessly repeating a phrase such as "Essex Brass Band" over and over will actually harm your ranking, and not improve it.

... A point not lost on me. The worrying thing is, this has been his only suggestion. I countered with issues like, "time and meat" (an earlier post) - something at XOOPS is excellent at. He started on more advanced topics, like using HTML rather than PHP. I stopped talking to him after that.

BlueStocking...

Thank you for your research. I think I should put a Wikipedia entry in too. That would add an extra result!

This chap seems to think we should appear on Google at number 1 when you enter the search phrase "Essex Brass Bands". He said that I should enter the words "Essex Brass Band" lots of times on the title page. I have a resonable grasp of how search engines rank sites - hense the results you see.

I think our band should try to be the best band is Essex before we can expect Google to rank our site at number 1 on such a general search. Minor point!

I'm trying to stay above this. There have been quite a few e-mails today that the committee have dealt with, but it's getting out of hand for such a simple website.

I'm not trying to change the world, I'm happy to do what the band wants. They seem to like the site I made for them, and an education for me. It's useful to hear how I can improve things, but this guy isn't suggesting any improvements to my mind. My idea was to have a site that everybody could be a part of - not that they often take advantage of it. But I'm aware my user base are not computer people.

With the theme, I was going for a brass look, but I will have a good play with new ideas, ocean sounds good. The tree in the logo is actually not from Epping Forest, but a tree in Hatfield Forest (trivia). I like my logo

Fixed it. Just goes to show, I should check IE user experience too! The file was missing and should have been there. Whoops. Thanks for the feedback.

Here are a couple of examples of themes that (I have been told) do not look like boxy XOOPS sites: (all of these are modifications to available XOOPS themes.

Many thanks for those examples. It seems a lot of you are identifying the theme and layout as the main culprits. Something I can easily work on.

Right, now I have a much clearer idea of the areas that need attention - thank you one and all

What will be the manner of adding content to the non-xoops site?

My point exactly. He made it very plain it was not his responsibility to provide content, just the design.

You have a blank.png in the Scabba news article displaying only the dreaded red X.

Eeeek..... I don't see it, there is no image in that article. The "News" module was trimmed as it did contain a lot of outdated items. It now looks a bit bare to me. I used to have lots of topics with a few news items in each. There is a public news side and a private "Band members" side.

I quite agree, and I've been struggling here I know. I'll redouble my efforts.

I think that quote counters nicely any comments he has made to me.

Many thanks for your direction. I know what I must do.

Hello fellow XOOPS users:

I've been running the Epping Forest Band website since 2004, after the band's previous effort to get online failed. I wanted to help out, and knew XOOPS could help me get online quickly, and also not tie any one person into providing all the content.

So the website has been through many changes - some good, some bad. Trying to implement every idea the band had proved interesting, and eventually I had to scale things back a little. Protector can sometimes be interesting, locking people out of the site. Also I've had to help the user base use their own computers! I guess we've all been there.

Recently - within the last few months, a web designer has joined the band and has been constantly demanding to take over the site - move away from XOOPS and use his design services. The band committee have been rebuffing these advances, and have kept their faith in my XOOPS based site. I am finding it frustrating dealing with the constant and substantial criticism from his sources.

Not sure why I'm posting to you all. I like using XOOPS and I think it has served the band well and will continue to do so.

Current site: http://www.eppingforestband.co.uk

The non-Xoops alternative: http://www.inet.me.uk/epping/

Any comment and advice gratefully received.

Daniel Andrews
EFB Webmaster

PS, any good brass players in the area - we need you! .... had to get that in!
