for xoops.org, the google ads get VERY little, only about $200-250/mo, and that with 10k visitors/day. So IMHO google ads do not bring any value to the table.

I've had far more success with Text-Link-Ads.com. You sell text links, and the revenue is much better. You have complete control over what links you put on your site. The main requirement is a decent PageRank tho.
