Giba, I'm sorry to say that your post confuses me a little. I suppose it's a language problem, because I've read many of your posts and I think I understand your intentions. You've included original portuguese; can someone help?

On the other hand, most of the discussions about XOOPS foundation, council, etc. are hard to follow. The last months I've spent many hours reading, and trying to understand what's going on. Unfortunately I'm not confident that I do understand.

After spending so much precious time, it is hard not to think I've been wasting my time. Is it really worth trying to fix the problems between persons and other entities? Perhaps everyone will feel better if they go their own way.

There is a good thing about open source. When you feel you don't get satisfaction enough, you are free to fork yourself ... whatever new project.

Anyway, hope to read more of your messages; whenever, wherever

Default notification method for new users is private message. Somewhere I've seen a site that changed this behaviour, but how?
The admin interface doesn't seem to have an option for this.

SOLVED

By chance just today the hosting company introduced a new data storage system and made some changes concerning shell. Shell user group seems to have changed also.
Performed a new install, exactly like previous. Now I can access my site, login, etc. but I'm still wondering why it works now.

Just before that I discovered some information concerning smarty and php safe mode, but now that everything seems to be working OK I didn't follow this instruction:
http://smarty.incutio.com/?page=SmartyFrequentlyAskedQuestions#basics-1
Q: How do you use Smarty with an ISP running PHP 4.2.1 with safe_mode on ? (rgittens)
A: Set $use_sub_dirs to false in Smarty.class.php.

phpinfo says: MySQL Client API version 3.23.49
http://wiki.xoops.org/wakka.php?wakka=XoopsRequirements says: You will likely have difficulties with 3.23.49a-MAX

Questions:
1) Is this the same MySQL version?
2) What difficulties can be expected? Blank pages I suppose!
3) Should I blame the hosting company and be sorry that I didn't choose to do my own hosting?
4) Or is it something else...

Thanks.

Yes, I've foundhttp://wiki.xoops.org/wakka.php?wakka=TroubleshootingBlankPage
I've turned on debugging, but blank page keeps laughing at me.

First I tried xoops-2.0.7.tar.bz2, which had to be converted on a local pc because my hosting company doesn't seem to support bzip2. Because I wanted to make sure the errors didn't occur because of this conversion, I also tried xoops-2.0.6.tgz, see below

shell:~/xoops206$ tar -zxvf ../xoops-2.0.6.tgz
shell:~/xoops206$ cd html
shell:~/xoops206/html$ cp -r * ../../public_html/

ftp> cd public_html
250 CWD command successful.
ftp> chmod 777 uploads/
200 SITE CHMOD command successful
ftp> chmod 777 cache/
200 SITE CHMOD command successful
ftp> chmod 777 templates_c/
200 SITE CHMOD command successful
ftp> chmod 666 mainfile.php
200 SITE CHMOD command successful

http://mysite.name
Clicked through install successfully, no errors, so I got to
Installation Complete
Your site
Click HERE to see the home page of your site.

http://mysite.name/index.php
This gives a blank page, with following html source:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
<HTML><HEAD>
<META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"></HEAD>
<BODY></BODY></HTML>

You don't have the right to access this area
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If the page does not automatically reload, please click here

The hosted environment has safe mode on, register_globals off
More details:http://phpinfo.dds.nl/index.php
These restrictions make it impossible for some other (cms) packages to use. Finally I found XOOPS which seemed to meet my requirements ...
Also tried MySQL persistent On in XOOPS installer, same results.
