Because he is not ready yet to publish it. That's how many developers work! They work on their "intellectual baby" on their computers, till they are ready to introduce it to the world.

The only problem is that I have been hearing about XOOPS 3.0 AND THE ALFA RELEASE FOR CLOSE TO ONE AND HALF YEAR. The problem with this is very nicely explained by trabis in his post

Quote:
Problem is with point 2, 3.0 is interfering with the current branches development as DJ want us to look into forward compatibility(impossible since core developers don't have access to 3.0 yet)

It is VERY important that we can review and approve 3.0 (even if in alpha state) in order to keep developing 2.5 and eventually 2.6.

Anyways with DJ saying that an alfa will be available for the developers within two weeks of xoops 2.4.5 release, the entire issue is no longer existent now as long as finally the developers get to see & understand the xoops 3.0 and take xoops forward.

Note: I will like to sincerely apologize to anyone that may have felt that I am attacking them, or who may have found my questions or long posts annoying, but I am trying to help by trying to bring about clarity by asking questions in a respectful manner because that is what my area of work is. I am not a developer, nor a theme designer, and I am here because I use xoops for my website and I love it.

Trying to help in whatever little way I can

LONG LIVE XOOPS

How much of your request is a simple "curiosity", and how much is a real desire to jump in and help?

Truth be said its more curiosity, but again the curiosity is there as there is a desire to help. And help in terms of bringing more clarity based on questions asked in a respectful manner.

Note: The questions being asked by me are purely there as I like many others in this topic love xoops. I genuinely feel all of us are looking at how to take xoops forward based on our point of views. Hence the intent is same for all, its just that the means are different. Through these question and responses I am trying to help by may be trying to find the logic behind the point of views, which will enable us to understand each-other better and work truly as a team in some manner or the other.

Nitin Shah

I understand the frustration of some developers, and as DJ said, I've been been harassing him for the last 6 months for dates. And I want to believe that we're getting close to the end of this journey, when 3.0 Alpha will be released.

But as much as we want it "right now", we cannot forget that we are all volunteers and we're doing the development in our free/spare time.

It saddens me that we so often just "demand" things from those poor souls, regardless of what is happening in their personal lives. Do we know if somebody died in their family? If they lost their job? If a new baby was born? If they got married and got divorced? Or if they got sick?

Brings me to the same question why is DJ the only one working on xoops 3.0

You do not completely understand the frustration because the frustration is not about not getting hands on xoops 3.0, its about not knowing what is xoops 3.0 all about.

I am not a developer but from what I have read in the forums, I feel Developers come forward give valuable suggestions, start working and then back out, why? because either they are informed that there work will not be included in xoops 3.0 (Eg- preloads) or are not given clarity as to whether it will be included.

From the end user perspective I am not sure whether I will like to upgrade to xoops 2.5 or not as its already been made clear that some of the features included in 2.4 series will not be a part of xoops 3.0, I guess the same applies to xoops 2.5 (ie some of the aditions in 2.5 may not be included in xoops 3.0) We have the bad experience with respect to xoops 2.2 and xoops 2.0.18 being different in there structure and all the problems because of that. How do we know the same will not happen with the 2.5 and 3.0 series.

I would hope that you would give me some credit that after almost 6 years on the project, I understand at least some of the problems here But sometimes throwing the baby with the bath is not the best solution!

Mamba you have done a lot of great things for xoops, one that stands out is your unending support to xoops. Complete credit to you for that.

Why the previous comment because you have an equal or may be more support for DJ then for xoops. Hence either you have not really understood the concerns of people posting in this topic or you choose to not understand hoping all will become fine.

No one really has a problem with you except for the lack of communication on your part before the change of ranks atleast in this particular topic (which in my opinion was very unprofessional).

All questions have been really aimed at DJ. One question that has not been answered ever and I ask again, why is DJ the only one working on xoops 3.0

First you get furious because it has been changed to "Module Developer", so I changed it back to what you wanted, and now you don't want it anymore?

John, why this drama?

The above post actually makes me laugh and cry at the same time, if that is possible.

Mamba I think you are still not able to understand the problem which is the worst part of it. The problem is as I understand

1. not the change of rank but the lack of communication before the change.
2. Look at all the posts in this particular thread. The no. of posts by major contributors to xoops like Catzwolf, trabis, kraven, witchcraft to name a few among others..... none of them are happy with the way xoops is being developed. Shouldn't this tell you something. Stop looking at one post at a time and look at the entire topic and all posts, this may help you understand what is happening here.

Believe me as an end user who is looking at this post my observation is that if all the other developers were asked to work together, we will have a major release soon which may actually be better then xoops 3.0

Mamba you are very good with words and explanation but just read the topic once from the first post till the last and then let us know what does the majority of the developers feel based on all the posts in this topic. Except for you and DJ no one is in favor of the way xoops development is taking place. If XOOPS IS POWERED BY THE COMMUNITY then the overwhelming majority of those who have posted in this topic feel the current process is wrong. Now dont you think the community opinion matters. If yes take the opinion and change the way things work. May be we need a new lead developer for xoops.

Just my thought but again I am just a user.

Mamba Said:
Quote:
We just didn't want to leave people who are still on PHP4 with a version that had bugs, so we had 2.4.5 as a "maintenance" release. Of course, all the changes in 2.4.5 would be merged into 2.5.0.

So this is the explanation why we had 2.4.5 and 2.5.0 at the same time. A simple time overlap, while trying to be "customer driven" and taking care of our users on PHP4.

Regarding 3.0 is a different story. This will be a different architecture, while keeping compatibility as much as possible with current XOOPS modules. Since it is a major task, and kind of experimental design, DJ was working separately on this to create a proof of concept.

Quote:
The idea is very simple - it's Parallel Development.

Parallel Development works brilliant for products like cars which are changed when a new model is required. After you have started using a car you do not upgrade it to a new model. Either you continue to use the old or buy the new one. Hence the old and the new can be completely different and not-compatible with each other.

For products like CMS which needs to maintain compatibility with atleast one previous version as ppl upgrade the system (eg- from 2.0.18 to 2.3 to 2.4 and so on...) and not replace it (As in case of Cars), the developers need to work together and not independently. If they work together maintaining compatibility is easier.

In the current senerio no one is aware what will be included in xoops 3.0. So where is the motivation to work for version 2.5. Hence Kraven in his previous post rightly pointed out

Quote:
Quote:
and what about the 2.5 ajax develop by xoops france team...what is xoops next plan?...
if xoops 3.0 comes out...how it will be merge with 2.5 ajax ?

We don't develop xoops 2.5 because we do not know if our work will be included or not in xoops 3.0. We do not want to work for nothing.

And now what happens to all the beautiful things we saw in xoops 2.5. Will it be developed now?
To be true its more disappointing rather then motivating.

Quote:
This approach is also based on our experience with Skalpa and his new version of XOOPS. For those of you who aren't here long enough, Skalpa, who was the lead developer in 2005, proposed a new XOOPS version called XoopSphere. A great concept, but while he was working on it, everything else stopped, and everybody waited for this new version. After a year of waiting, Skalpa was not able to finish it due to health issues. So we've ended up without the new version, and with wasted one year because we didn't work on the standard XOOPS version.

I trust DJ that he'll deliver the new version, but we couldn't take again such a risk as with Skalpa (in case DJ get sick, or get hit by a bus, etc.). So in order to avoid this kind of risk, we've continued with 2.4.x and started work on 2.5.0.

I think from Skalpa case we have learnt but the wrong or incomplete lesson.
The mistake was not only that xoops stopped developing the existing system while waiting for the XoopSphere, the real problem was that Skalpa was the only one working on it. With Xoops 3.0, We have continued making the same mistake as it is only DJ who is working on it.

So the question remains, Why is DJ the only one working on Xoops 3.0?

Again this is not to say that one person is wrong and other is right, everyone has there own opinions and I am sure we all are looking at finding the best way forward for xoops.

Actually I have been working on X3 full-time since long time ago, every day and night. Even for right now, it is 12:40 in the evening for me, I am still writing code X3.
Thus I have been quiet on the forum, just discuss SVN topics with other developers in mail list.

The good thing is that after so long time hard design and development, a brand new architecture with basic services is being finalized. Actually I have started to invite other designers and developers for internal preview, especially ajax for user experience improvement.

I hope a small group of developers and designers will start to expand the X3.

When? I would say very likely in two weeks.
before that, we will have a brief architecture description and by next week.

DJ again with all respect to you as you have done far more for xoops then i can even hope too and so maybe I am not the right person to poke my nose here but since I love xoops and am greateful to all those who have worked for xoops,
Why are you the only one working on xoops 3 when there are many developers ready to provide you a helping hand?

But, honestly, DJ should have had something workable by now. I did Zarilia in a year on my own. Xoosla refactoring in three months, Eduardo did Exm in a shorter time and the same with Simple Xoops.

John, let's not start a "pissing contest" here. What are you trying to say? That you're smarter/better developer than DJ? Is it really needed this kind of approach?

Catwolf never seems to have compared himself with DJ. So its actually your post mamba that seems to start a pissing contest. And surely xoops doesn,t need one.

All he said is about time which is true. Maybe DJ is the best developer in the world but if he does not have the time what use is it to xoops?

Also with all due respect to DJ and his ability lets look at this objectively and not based on our liking or respect for a person but in the overall interest of xoops
