I'm guessing by the lack of replies that this can't be done.

What I would like to do: My locations module can use one or more mapping modules, to display different types of maps. I would like to be able to choose, from the locations module control panel, which map module to use. The map modules are effectively libraries that can be installed and uninstalled.

What I would like to see is:

1. Modules to be able to save (arbitrary) metadata about their operation. and

2. modules to be able to be informed when other modules are either installed or uninstalled.

This would increase the ways the modules could work together, and therefore, increase the ways that module writers could collaborate.

just thought of another use... For example, an administrator could choose which rich text editor to use, out of many installed ones. Modules could basically be components. Like dlls, or shared libraries.

This would be a great addition, and i think it would contribute to the growth of Xoops.

I would like to have some module metadata stored in xoops_config/xoops_configcategory

Basically, I just need one bit of information stored for now... Which is just whether the module supports displaying maps. I am working on some modules having to do with mapping locations.

I suppose it has something to do with putting data in xoops_config.

all the module would have to have for now is:

mapping=1 (or something similar)

From within another module, I would like to query the metadata... But, possibly, using some XOOPS API, rather than just using SQL.

Does any one know how this works? Could you let me know?

say if I wanted to save metadata for a module.

For example, I have a locations module that i want to be able to interact with a mapping module. But the locations module has to know what the available mapping modules are.

So, in order to do that, I would have to save some data on the module... Such as

mapping=1

So, how could i save this data? I guess i would have to do something with xoops_version.php

Also, how (if possible) do i set up notifications to the locations module for when new modules are added?

I can not figure out how to post pictures in xcGallery.

I am testing it right now, and I have made two galleries, but I do not see any link to actually post an image.

What do I click on?

mamboserver.com has a higher google pagerank, so some one must like it a lot. Whatever that's worth.

So th ethreat isn't that big IMHO.

How do I change my username (if I am a regular user not an admin)? I just went to Edit Profile screen, and the name "DMarvelus" doesn't seem like you can edit it.

does XOOPS 2.2 check for duplicate display names?

Yes

I'm really not too familiar with the new system, so I could be wrong, but i just wanted to mention this scenario:

New security threat:

Display name spoofing.

lets say Mithrandir (hypothetically) decides to change his display name. He just decides one day he wants to be called something else.

Then, some clever person out there decides to change their display name to Mithrandir... And on top of that, they send mail to different people saying: "Important bug fix! please download the new version of XOOPS here:http://mysite.com/xoops.zip" The user goes and downloads the "patch" only to find there is a trojan horse in the php code.

Some one could also change their name to a previously used name just to get personal information from some one else. For example, even just asking for email addresses, or how the date went last night or whatever.

I said that to say, there is a certain amount of trust that people give names. But, now that trust is no longer there because these names are somewhat interchangeable. You loose the ability to tell who is who with 100% probability. This provides a security hole in which a hacker doesn't really have to do anything clever or technical (unlike before), and you could have a much bigger problem.

Even if you did have a system where you kept track of past display names, so people could not use them anymore, you could run out the namespace quickly if people frequently changed names.

I use the spatial database extensions in PostgreSQL... MySql hasn't caught up yet in that area. Can I use XOOPS with PostGreSQL?
