Good suggestions, but a big job to post to all of them.

Is any one of the above list the most "logical" choice were there to be a single nominated posting point?

Or is just one posting-point a little idealistic?

Why not set up a XOOPS security email list that people can subscribe to? Not only could it be used to provide timely security patch announcements, it could also be used to advise users of xoops.org downtime and similar issues. Ideally should not be on the same server, of course.

It should be trivial to set up, inexpensive to run and provides the single launch point for the admins. If its opt-in there'd probably only be a few thousand users max, so bandwidth would not be onerous. People that care can subscribe to it, and people that don't won't have many grounds to complain about being uninformed.

Dave, I don't think your comments were entirely fair. The perpetual flame wars are a symptom of a problem, not the cause. Get the teams set up, give them access to the tools and authority they need to do their job, let people who want to participate do so, and provide some kind of mechanism to interface the community with the management. And then let it run.

Trying to run the project from the top down is a mistake. It hasn't worked before, its not going to work now. No offense intended to anybody, its just what I think.

Absolutely!

Councils and teams and nothing gets done....There is so so much time wasted on all of this stuff. I really feel that we should let everyone stand on their own merits.

If you wanna say it then be ready for the wrath. The members around here that speak with knowledge and confidence will rise to the top. The douchebags will be, well, douchebags and they'll ban themselves. We're all intelligent people around here and why should kc0maz (not personal but just wonder how he can possibly make that determination without some bias) determine who says what?

As it is, we spend more time on flame wars and personal attacks because they keep getting moderated and nothing gets settled. GET IT OUT IN THE OPEN AND SETTLE IT! If you need multiple accounts, you're a pussy and everyone will know it. If you have the truth behind you then bring it and all will come to the proper conclusions.

Seth

P.S. One the most informative sites I have ever come across and that I read everyday has a policy of moderating basically nothing. The site has become the most popular web site in it's area of interest in the world. People have said some crazy things and done some crazy stuff but if you are going to post you better be knowledgeable, truthful and confident or else you will get shot down in flames instantly. The information on this site is second to none and it has actually revolutionized some pretty important aspects of the sport that it covers.

As a matter of fact, a racing machine was conceived of, designed, built and delivered in record numbers around the world all in the user forums with no moderation....That's a $100,000.00 piece of equipment. Essentially, an open source racing machine and that's the truth.

If it was moderated it simply would not have existed and that's a fact.

No one is arguing having a closed repository is a bad thing, we only are wondering about the change in protocol and lack of direction that brought about this change.

As you and others have seen, you're work is often for not around here lately. Sorry it turns out that way but hopefully direction and communication will return to this project soon.

I dont't question anyone's technical ability nor do I question their dedication but I do wonder what the direction is and how it can continue like this.

Another good reason not to re-register in a new forum. Otherwise we're all back to the status of 'just popping in'.

But, the understanding I have is that this version of NEWBB has been customized and configured in such a way that it is not upgradeable in any reasonable fashion. That leaves you with the same problem no matter what. Unless, somebody has written an export to bring all of this data into the new forums. In that case, it doesn't matter whether it's xoopsinfo.org, forums.xoops.org or whatever it's called.

Pretty close, Darcy. This thread is step 5 and will remain open until Sunday. Thence 5.5 (summarization and drafting of 'the plan').
Trouble is, I can't find any one with the necessary rights/authority to make the steps 1~5 a step 6 reality.

I'll say this again (though my face may be showing a tinge of blue by now)

Which committee is charged with making the changes?
Who has the authority to alter the code of x.o site?
Who has the ability to action the same?

You know what? I can type these questions with my eyes closed I've asked it so often.

Crip

Hey Crip,

Who has the rights? PHPPP must. He wants to analayze this a little more because it hasn't been done enough times before so just hang in there.

The Technical group has invited two server administrators, jdseymour and Mr Xiao LI. Both are excellent additions to the Technical group, and are handling the migration of XOOPS.org and dev.XOOPS.org to the new servers.

He's lined up his new server administrators, jdseymour obviously having been around for awhile is a nice addition. Mr Xiao Li is someone that I am not familiar with (maybe others are), although I'll take a shot in the dark and guess that he is "Xiaoca" and appears to have posted on these forums 3 times. Not that posting around here makes you smart but it seems like you would choose someone that is committed to the community, garnered its respect, knows how to communicate with it and has been around for awhile.

So why not get going with xoopsinfo.org being called - forums.xoops.org. Make the appropriate links on the front page of xoops.org, integrate the user database and add the additional search capabilities that would allow this to come together. Then move on to the next project which maybe docs or wiki or whatever. The organization owns the hardware and the domain name even though it will no longer be relevant once it's "forums.xoops.org". It's all in place and paid for - use it!

At Forums.xoops.org I can post on any form I can read.

At xoopsinfo.com if I want to comment to a person regarding a post I have to pm them -- That is true with anyone else who isn't in the approved circle.

To put it mildly, I resent this.

...darcy

I don't understand what you are saying. Are you saying that some forums are read-only? That is true of the current xoops.org as well. Actually, I believe there are some forums that are not even visible to the community much less read-only!

It's all meaningless when configured properly. Plus, when the day comes that this hardware/software configuration is operating beyond its capacity it'll all be a non-issue anyway.

DJ, where are you? Who's in charge here? The discussion has been open for a while now. What's the decision? Who has the most important opinion here? kc0maz, is this what you were looking for? Is the community ready for this?
