No you're correct.
The private feature is intended to be for sharing. If marked public you have an option to render to (facebook, twitter etc), if marked public the share feature is off..
At the moment I'm writing new code to give an option for all users (incl anonymous) to read posts and comments which are marked public if set by admin.
It's a bit tricky because it ought to be set in index page (startpage idea) but still make commenting, uploading and accessing search and profile items unavailable for non friends, and non users.... But I'm getting there.

I translated 2.5.5 to danish ages ago, and uploaded to svn.. I just never got around to upload to transifex.. I have upload now though, better late than never

But one more issue I did find is that the avatar used in my XOOPS profile does not display in the smallworld profile, even if I manually select it from the link made available for that purpose in that profile. The space reserved remains blank.

I havent had a chance yet to test the order of installing xim and smallworld. I think initially I had xim installed and then installed smallworld. If error try the good old maintenance "Clean caches, update system module etc"

I think you need to clean caches. Sounds like this could be the reason they are still calling xim & smallworld ajax. All these calls are physical in the modules and if the modules have been deleted this could be the only reason I can think of.
EDIT: I didnt see the installation sequence problem. This is new to me but I'll test to see if also I get this issue.

I would like to have shorter urls, hence my question on another topic of whether there was any way or hack to shorten urls in Xoops. If anyone can help at this point would be very grateful. Many thanks,
Smallworld uses an option set in config where links to profile are translated automaticly to smallworld profile links, but for shortening urls this thread should be a good place to start
