Apparently smartsection does it - but I can't get it to upload pdf files because it says it does not support mime type.

I am thinking of writing a hack for the News module so you can upload a picture for each news item. The picture will be used on the main news item page and and thumbnail version of it can be displayed per headline. Admin will be able to select how pictures should be displayed e.g. top right, center, top right.
So has anyone done anything like this already before spend time on this - I suspect a lot of people would find it useful.
