Why have a gripe, katim110 only said thank you to various people and a good bye to all.

There should be no gripe with this, it's better than just disappearing.

So why not announce it, XOOPS should have nothing to fear, people use XOOPS for a reason as do others with a different system.

Perhaps katim110 didn't leave because of issues with XOOPS, perhaps they left because Joomla had something to offer which XOOPS doesn't, I know they have a fair few commercial options amongst other things.

I certainly didn't see anything in katim110 that was trying to bring down the community, I just saw a sincere thank you message. gee people are too sensitive sometimes.
Kind Regards.

Considering that the first GPL Lawsuit was filed September 20th of this year, there really isn't a legal precedent set in the law books, afaik. Most disputes have been handled directly by the Free Software Foundation.

Do you mean first American GPL lawsuit?

Quote:
In the MySQL v NuSphere lawsuit the GPL came close to be examined in court, but the case was ultimately settled out of court in 2002. In the infamous SCO Group v IBM Inc. lawsuit the GPL might in the end be subject of a court ruling, but, as the case is still ongoing and will be so for a while yet, interested parties will have to wait and see on the issue.

I came across more the other day, but couldn't find the urls again.

You know I've asked a few times in the past about a section on XOOPS which could list commercial services for development, modules, themes, but nothing ever seems to be done. All it would take is a new category in the weblinks section.

Or is XOOPS being GPL and in the spirit of open source, not going to condone such commercial avenues.

Perhaps an official response would be cool here.

Personally being a business, I'd like to find one location, one directory showing me my options, we're not talking about supporting one of the other, just showing users their options for something a little different or unique.
Kind Regards.

Do you mean for doing courses or lessons over the net?

If so there ishttp://moodle.org/

There used to be a modulised version of this, but it seems the main xoopsmoodle site is now gone.

mentioned here:http://docs.moodle.org/en/Integrations#Moodle4Xoops

You maybe able to find that module still out there some where.

If your after something totally different, then I'm sorry I didn't understand.
Kind Regards.

Sure go for it.

I could be wrong, but it would still appear there is some kinda of conflict with the module and it's clone if it's playing up in the user profile.

So the next Question, but this could just be nit picking.

Quote:
any HTML file which merely makes function calls to this code, and for that purpose includes it by reference shall be deemed a separate work for copyright law purposes.

I'm not a coder, is the html theme merely making function calls to the code?

Looks like I certainly do stand corrected, unless anyone else has something else to offer to this debate?
Kind Regards.

Script_Fu

It's from the GPL FAQ:

Quote:
I am writing a website maintenance system (called a “content management system” by some), or some other application which generates web pages from templates. What license should I use for those templates?

Templates are minor enough that it is not worth using copyleft to protect them. It is normally harmless to use copyleft on minor works, but templates are a special case, because they are combined with data provided by users of the application and the combination is distributed. So, we recommend that you license your templates under simple permissive terms.

Some templates make calls into Javascript functions. Since Javascript is often non-trivial, it is worth copylefting. Because the templates will be combined with user data, it's possible that template+user data+Javascript would be considered one work under copyright law. A line needs to be drawn between the Javascript (copylefted), and the user code (usually under incompatible terms).

A diagram of the above content

Here's an exception for Javascript code that does this:

As a special exception to GPL, any HTML file which merely makes function calls to this code, and for that purpose includes it by reference shall be deemed a separate work for copyright law purposes. In addition, the copyright holders of this code give you permission to combine this code with free software libraries that are released under the GNU LGPL. You may copy and distribute such a system following the terms of the GNU GPL for this code and the LGPL for the libraries. If you modify this code, you may extend this exception to your version of the code, but you are not obligated to do so. If you do not wish to do so, delete this exception statement from your version.

I don't recall specifically seeing something for Geeklog, however the following dev project is not related to converting GL, but does appear to have scripts for importing users, forums, etc from other systems, perhaps this could put you on the right tracks if you were to migrate and do something yourself.

Sorry I couldn't be of any further help.

Oh DefianceB0y I don't really like beer that much either, I do like Jack D's though. lol

ok cool, glad we're not arguing.

I'm not an expert on GPL

Smarty is still licensed under the GNU?

I know some people look at this as a grey area.

Quote:
If I have to write my new themes in PHP then I will, if that will make you see that the code has nothing to do with xoops. My themes aren't event based off of XOOPS default themes. I am not sure where anyone got the idea that code could not fall under a private license. It is an original work.

You don't have to make me see anything, I honestly respect what you say, and fully understand where your coming from, if you specifically asked me not to do something with your theme, then I'd personally comply.

When I was talking about the code being derived, again only my interpretation but if it uses gpl code to function then it's derived, I honestly don't know where that lines drawn between what's classed as derived and what's not, because technically in my eyes, if you made the theme as a stand-a-lone html template and licensed it, then later XOOPS'd it, in theory it's an original piece that was converted, so the original licence would have to remain.

I don't know...............

I think Herko's had more experience with the GPL and the law, perhaps if he see's this he could give the foundation lawyer/solicitors version, as they would be better verse in the legalities.

Or if anyone else here has a legal background perhaps they could drop us a note.
Kind Regards.
