More confusing...

In my 'play' site, I found that logged on as webmaster, if I posted a news article and did not approve it I could then not go back and approve it!

I went to the news preferences and set the option to allow authors to edit their own posts.

After that, the webmaster user could edit and approve all posts.

Now.... back to my main site... where it all works as it should....

the allow authors to edit their posts is NOT switched on so this is not the complete answer but it may get things working for you.

For some reason if I try and edit any news posting I get a "you do not have permission" error even though i've set all the permissions appropriately. Any ideas?

I was getting that too and I finally figured it out.

If you go into Groups on the main admin area, make sure all the check boxes for access to News are set. You have to do this as well as permissions in the news area.

That worked for me anyhow.

(edit)
Just tried out what I said on a test site. It didn't help. I recall now I had to upgrade to news 1.42 which is painless

cant remember where I got the files off hand. will come back if I find them.

(another edit)

I no longer know what is going on.
I have news 1.4 working on my main site after a few frustrating days.

After giving the advice here, I tried out my instructions again on another site I just use for experimenting with. No matter what I do there, I get the same problem again.

I know I must have done SOMETHING to fix my problem
I now do not know what it was that fixed it and I no longer know where to look.

I know. I did that. checked it a dozen times.

checked the user s group settings

nothing worked. THEN I came here and posted the question.

Since posting the question, I saw there was an upgrade 1.4 to 1.42. Did that and it worked.

maybe there was something messed up in the database somewhere and the upgrade fixed it.

anyway, all is well in news now.

Thanks

I carried on looking...

I saw version 1.42 was available.

I uploaded that. Set all the permissions etc

Now I can approve BUT the SPAW editor does not come up - just the plain old editor. Again I have checked the settings.

I am now going to trach news 1.42 and pit 1.4 back and see.

I removed my installation of news and installed 1.4 again from new and it worked fine.

Although, I have another, even newer problem. It seems that whenever I ask you a question, the thing starts working so I will ask about my latest worry.....

I have posted a news article as a user who does not have approval rights.

I then log on as webmaster who has all rights to everything.

I go to the edit news page, click on the article that needs approval and get a screen telling me I do not have permission...

I have posted the full details in another thread but I thought I'd ask while I had your kind attention

I was absolutely certain that I had done everything you said.

I checked it twice.

I saw your reply, did it again and it worked. Thanks.

Can I ask for more help now please?

The advantage I see with spaw is that I can just copy and paste from a word document and all the formatting stays intact.

This is ideal for the site I want to build. I want others in my group to be able to post newsletters and web pages via news. It is enough of a miracle that these folks use MS word, getting them to use the XOOPS admin interface will be a challenge.

In the download of SPAW, the readme file gave instructions on how to get NEWS to use it. I have followed those instructions but still the standard edit form comes up rather than the spaw editor.

Any suggestions there?

Oh dear.

I edited the file as suggested and now on entering evennews admin I get

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_CLASS in /home/httpd/vhosts/harlowjazz.co.uk/httpdocs/xodir/modules/evennews/admin/index.php on line 18

Precise details....

Running XOOPS 2.0.13.1
go to module admin page
click on even news picture - get the error.

However... hover over even-news and click on preferences in the popup menu, I get to the even news preferences page.

I don't know enough yet to know where to look next
