Re: Podcasting

Thanks for the kind words.

Unfortunately, it's been a while since i made that post -- and since that time I've switched that site over to WordPress. Sorry -- I decided to use software that's a little more blog-friendly than XOOPS and forgot that I'd pointed y'all at the URL.

But the idea's still the same -- and Feedburner's still the key to making a XOOPS site into a podcasting site. The thing that makes podcasting different from just posting MP3s for people to download is in the ability to "subscribe" to an RSS feed and have the audio files automatically flow down to your computer (or MP3 player).

Re: AMS 2.41 -- can't figure out how to differentiate "intro" text

yep, that's *exactly* what i'm hunting for.

however i tried putting the tag into a "too long" article, but it didn't have any effect. until i learned about the "revision" buttons -- i had better results when i selected one of those, up until then i hadn't been changing the article.

so the [extend] tag is the winner. thanks!

is there a spot where tags like that are documented? i bet there are other goodies like that.

before discovering my "non-updating" mistake, i dropped in the Koivi editor -- interestingly, with that editor the Submit page is has the additional fields to allow "body" and "extended" text -- just like News. pretty nifty.

but i haven't found installation instructions to really integrate it with AMS, so other things (like photo upload/management) are broken when i switched my users over to Koivi. looking at the Koivi documentation, it's clear that some patches probably need to be applied to AMS, but i couldn't find the documentation on how to do dat.

to summarize my questions;

- where can i find documentation of tags like [extend]?

- has anybody written up what is required to integrate Koivi with AMS?

thanks again -- i'm on the air, users are happily using AMS.

AMS 2.41 -- can't figure out how to differentiate "intro" text

hi all,

this is a boneheaded question, but i can't quite figure out how to make the distinction between the "intro" text in AMS 2.41 articles. in News, there are two boxes in the editor -- the "intro" stuff appears on the summary page and "read more" takes you to the full text.

in AMS, i can't figure out how to make this go -- but i know it's possible because the articles i ported over from News retain that distinction in Articles. so there's some flag/switch that i must be missing.

thanks, in advance, for clues.

Re: Migrating a blog from Xoops to WordPress

I looked at it -- but decided to go with native WordPress because "WordPress under Xoops" felt like using the 747 to carry a wagon to go to the grocery store, instead of just using the wagon.

I also like the idea of maintaining one code-base -- either XOOPS or WordPress. If something breaks in the "WordPress under Xoops" environment, I have to look in two user/support communities for answers. And I'm not in the "normal" configuration for either gang.

I think it's a "personal preferences" thing -- lots of people will probably want to look at WordPress under Xoops.

The conversion issues will be pretty much the same. You'll still have to import the posts from the News module, tinker with the RSS feeds, get PHPMail working, redirect the URL's, etc. So either way you do it, you might still find my little cookbook useful.

Migrating a blog from Xoops to WordPress

Hi gang,

I'm a big fan of XOOPS for lots of stuff, but it doesn't do real well at just a simple blog or podcast site. On the one hand, XOOPS is so powerful that sometimes it feels like driving to the grocery store in a 747. On the other hand, XOOPS doesn't "get" blogging stuff like pings, trackbacks, permalinks or "search engine friendly" URLs very well.

So I decided to convert one of my blogs from XOOPS to WordPress -- a free, open source blogging platform that, like Xoops, has a very frisky development and support community.

I wrote a little blog entry about the process and thought I would share it with those of you who are contemplating the same move. My environment is Windows Server (2003), and there are some Windows-specific tips in there, but most of the entry is applicable for all platforms.

No, I'm not leaving XOOPS -- it's great for lots of things, and crushes WordPress if you have to do something more complex than a simple blog. Sometimes you just need a chisel rather than a laser-cutter that's all.

Here's the link;

Enjoy

Re: 2.0.7x to 2.0.9.2 upgrade - I've really hosed up my sweetheart's blog -- help

sometimes it's better to be lucky than smart. <grin>

one last teeny tiny hangnail. custom modules are working, but Javascript isn't. unfortunately, nothing shows up in any of the debugs to give me a clue -- but when i put the little Javascript widget back in the module two things happen.

first, the "preview" of the block stops happening.

second, the Javascript part of the custom block doesn't display.

it's not a big deal -- just some Javascript to slow down the spam email address harvesters. but if you know the no-brainer answer, t'would be great to get that tidied up.

Re: 2.0.7x to 2.0.9.2 upgrade - I've really hosed up my sweetheart's blog -- help

you got it in 1! i'm am forever in your debt.

the site (www.prairie.haven.com by the way) is back on the air. a huge relief.

one thing i can't figure out -- in the old site i had a little custom block of HTML and some Javascript to present Marcie's email address (the script would run, creating the "mailto:" tag at page-view time to discourage address-harvesting).

i can't get even the most basic of custom blocks to work properly. i can edit them and preview them, and the database reports success when i post them. but they display erratically. sometimes not at all, sometimes just the heading but no text. you got any ideas on that one? i have a theory but i don't want to sully your brain with it.

other than that one little hangnail, all is healed.

again, a thousand thanks.

ah.

dinner will be a lot calmer now that i can tell her that i have A Plan...

i think i'll wait 'til morning to actually try it though. let my nerves settle down a bit. this has been a bit of a Knotted Stomach afternoon.

question; do you think i could point the fresh install at the existing database, rather than doing a restore from the backed up copy?

thanks! i'll post a reply with the results when i have them.

Re: 2.0.7x to 2.0.9.2 upgrade - I've really hosed up my sweetheart's blog -- help

No. but i have the suspicion that the site may have been hacked -- my server is port-scanning, and the XOOPS stuff is about all that runs on it. so i figured that perhaps that instance (the oldest) had been hijacked.

but the site ran just fine -- no problems.
