@redheadedrod

You must have posted while I was typing my previous reply. Our newsletter would be too long and complicated to send as an email. However, I could just send the link to it on the web site. My main concern would be the send rate. If Xoops just spewed forth 800+ messages, they'd be blocked, as I have said. If the functionality could be added to that Mail Users function to limit the send rate, it would be much more useful.

Yes, I've thought about that but, as far as I'm aware, the Mail Users function does not allow attachments. Also, I don't know if the sending of messages is throttled at all. If it's not, the web provider will block them as suspect spam. We would be sending out over 800 messages. I have used Dada Mail to send occasional mass emails to members. That program sends one message every 8 seconds, which prevents them being identified as spam.

As you say, the message could include a link to the newsletter on our site, which would get around the lack of ability to attach files.

Does anyone know whether the Xoops Mail Users function is throttled?

A long time ago there was an attempt made to develop a module that could be used for sending newsletters and the like. As far as I'm aware, the attempt died.

Our club, for which I maintain the web site, sends out a monthly newsletter. Currently that is done by sending an email to recipients on an email list, attaching the newsletter as a PDF.

That means we have to maintain an email list as well as our membership roster on the web site (those registered users who are in the "member" group). It would make life simpler if there were a module that could send out the email with the attachment to users in the member group.

Such a module would have to be able to throttle the sending of messages so that web providers don't treat the email as spam.

Am I missing something? Does such a module exist?

By nature I am an "updater" but updating Xoops, especially major upgrades, always seems to carry the risk of breaking some modules. It's a problem as there is no way to "force" contributors to upgrade modules to run on the latest version of Xoops. I know attempts are being made to upgrade at least the most commonly used modules and I applaud that, but it probably leaves some of the less common ones "out in the cold".

I had a problem I had to solve that led to this thought of upgrading to 2.5.4 but I found another solution. I think I'll wait until some of these coming module updates arrive.

Mamba, as I said, I'm currently running Xoops 2.4.4. Below are the modules I'm running, as reported by the Xoops Info module. In some I have changed the module name but have included the actual module name in parenthesis.

Any information I can get on which of these will run under 2.5 and which will cause a problem would be appreciated. I may need to find alternatives to some of them and to rebuild the site, something I don't particularly look forward to.

Thanks Mamba,

essentially you are right. I was not familiar with D3 modules and had not installed the files in xoopslib.

Now, however, I find that fmcontent only works under xoops 2.5. I am still running 2.4.4, mainly because I am concerned that some of the modules I have installed will not work under 2.5. I'd like to upgrade but don't want to be in a situation of breaking a bunch of things on my site. Is there a list anywhere of what modules work with 2.5? If I provided a list of the modules I'm running, could anyone advise me?

I have just noticed that I have a peculiar problem, that I don't understand at all. I just uploaded the fmcontent module so that I could try it. I uploaded it, of course, to the modules folder but it does not show in the list of uninstalled modules when I access the System/modules administration page. There were a few other uninstalled modules in my modules folder. I could only see a couple of them and the others were also not shown.

I did a check db on my xoops installation via my web provider's cpanel and everything reported OK.

I'm at a loss to understand this. Can anyone suggest what might be the problem because, as is, I can't install any new modules. Already installed modules do show up.

Edit: The other thing I should point out is that I am not seeing the normal admin page. It looks like this, which shows part of the modules admin screen.

I'd appreciate any help that can be offered.

I am using CBB module version 3.08. This module allows you to put particular users on moderation by putting them in a group that is not allowed to post without approval. Unfortunately I can't find any way that the moderators can be notified of pending posts. As far as I can see, the moderator has to check frequently to see if there are pending posts. It would be nice if the moderator could be sent a notification by email that a pending post is present.

Am I missing something? Is there a way to do this?

@trabis,

yes, it is there, got 8 hits as a matter of fact, all with different IP addresses but with the same email. Even the user ID was the same (for 7 of them) as was used on my site.

Will the new version of Protector only run on Xoops 2.5.2? I'm still using 2.4.4, mainly because I'm afraid of breaking some of the modules on my site if I update.

Wouldn't you know it, after saying the other day that I was still not getting any spam registrations, I got one this morning. Because my site does not get that many genuine registrations, I have it set up such that I have to approve new registrations. It is usually not too difficult to spot the spam. The one this morning gave an address in NSW, Australia, but the country was actually in Chinese characters, plus the email address was in China. I didn't approve that one. It was an exception and I can still say I get very few registration notifications that are not genuine.

I guess the moral of the story is that nothing is perfect. I suspect the one I got this morning was from a human but I haven't checked the logs to see if it looks like a bot.
