I thought the guy meant /they/ would be doing a competition and implementing the stuff or asking readers too, didn't mean necessarily the core developers.

Still, the best things take time - I hope XOOPS stays around long enough for my business to take off so I can put more time, effort, and money back into it.

All the best,

Steve

I agree, however I think you have nothing to worry about in either case - XOOPS is pretty flexible. I tried to touch on that in my reply to the group, but if its a "contest" thing they want then they might not change their mind - best not to miss any opportunity IMHO :)

Hi Martin,

I hope you don't mind but I posted a copy of your request on the XOOPS OS CMS site as I thought it may be of interest to them. After spending two years testing out most of the CMSs you can find on www.opensourcecms.com I've stuck with XOOPS due to it's ease of use and quality object-oriented design. Last year I showed it to BT and they now use it for their InsightExec Partner Portal athttp://partners.insightexec.com.

Good luck with the article - many attempts have been made to compare all the systems, however as they change very quickly and every user's preferences are different this has been hard to achieve. The most exciting developments of late have been the OSCommerce integrations, providing fully integrated community, commerce, and content management. This is a great leap forward - three years ago I was providing similar systems to the likes of volkswagen.co.uk and B&Q's diy.com for six figure sums, now with open source I am providing the same level of functionality to SMEs!

All the best,

Steve Purkiss

Hi,

Just received this on the oscom.org mailing list - thought it might be of interest to the XOOPS team in case you're not on the list...

---8<---
My name is Martin Streicher and I am the Editor-in-Chief of Linux Magazine. I am writing to ask (again, because I dropped the ball) how LM might cover the many open source content management systems that are available today. In the past, Gregor and I discussed having a competition of sorts, where each system could implement as many requirements as possible from a list of desirable site features.

Ideally, the implemented sites could be reused so the effort would not be wasted -- the sites could be samples provided with the software or even placed "live" on the web as a real site for something like a non-profit. Linux Magazine would not restrict the distribution of the sites -- we'd merely want a short exclusive on the feature itself.

Please drop me a line if you have thoughts or comments and we can try to pull something together.

Martin

Just so you know, one of the document we are working on is called Simple FAQs for new xoopsers. This maybe something usefull for you (and the entire community of course !). We are nearly finished with this document. If you want, maybe you could help us with this document. I read that Horacio contacted you. If you're interested, we could use an xtra hand !

Yes, this and the the visual introduction look very good. I found some free software Wink which allows you to record tutorials and demos and output to Flash, PDF, and HTML and that's what I was thinking of using to create a few intro tutorials.

I'm not sure what else you need at the moment for the FAQ and the visual guide - they seem pretty publishable to me.

Thanks for the reply Herko.

Was a v.long day yesterday, so long in fact I didn't realise it was 2004 - D'oh!

I've received an email from Horacio and am just taking a look now to see if there's anywhere I can help with - I need to produce some newbie user guide for XOOPS anyway, so sure I can be of help somewhere.

Cheers,

Hi,

I have just Horacio's post from 2003/2/6 saying that the docs are in development. I'm in desperate need for some kind of user guide but all I could find on the site in the User Guide is:

"Why can i edit this??? This is very safe.

This shouldnt be. I hope there is a backup of this and for god sake dont have it that anyone can edit this page."

Also found a link to a music site but nothing in downloads section as described.

If I have the situation right and I've not totally missed the wood for the trees and there are docs near completion, is it possible to have copies? I would be glad to help proof-read or help with as much as I can whenever I catch a spare mo.

I did try emailing you but returned saying mailbox full - maybe I'm not the only one to ask...

There's a XOOPS OSCommerce module in development over at http://xosc.xoops2.org/.

Core engine works, blocks etc. still to be sorted out. A friend of mine already used it in one shop, and I'm working on one too (just starting so won't be very helpful yet!).

I think XOOPS admin is one of its greatest selling points, it's by far the easiest one I've used!

Hi,

I haven't tried it myself yet (but plan to) however as all the database information is stored in the mainfile.php then having seperate ones means you can point each instance at a different database, thus seperating the content for each site.

Having just moved three sites to a different server and changing the database names in the process, I can vouch for the fact the only place instance-specific information is held is in mainfile.php (although my uploaded images are not there as the paths have changed so need to sort that out!).

Disclaimer: I might be wrong

Hiya,

There's a thread here covering running multiple instances off one install.
