Thank you all for your brilliant development of 2.5.5 Final. It's great! :)

Is it the final version of 2.5 branch? Will there be 2.5.6? Will the next version be 2.6.0 Final?

Thank you very much!

2.5.5 Is likely the last in the 2.5 branch. Unless serious bugs or security problems are found it should be the last version.

2.6 should be the next version coming up.

If 2.6 is going to be coded to Zend requirements, backward-compatibility just isn't going to happen and it will probably break all the remaining modules in the repository. The only ones likely to work will be from the starter packs re-developed by the core team and associates.

I don't know why you don't just call it Xoops 3 and make a fresh start.

Peekay, XOOPS 2.6.0 will be a cleaned-up, refactored, and streamlined XOOPS, i.e. all PHP 4 code will be removed, as well as code from old versions of XOOPS, and there will be more consistency throughout the Core.

This will be best quality XOOPS ever. Even if this is only a pre-Alpha version, there is at the moment not a single error notice when using E_STRICT on PHP 5.4, which we cannot say about 2.5.5 under E_STRICT. Trabis did a fantastic job with cleaning up the 2.6.0 code.

ForMuss also added Twitter's Bootstrap, which is very cool! And Mage is working on extracting features like Smilies, Avatar and others, and making them independent plugins, so the Core becomes more "lean & mean".

Once we are done with 2.6.0 and is working properly, we'll start adding new features to it.

I encourage you to download the pre-Alpha version from SourceForge SVN and take a look, so you'll have a better perspective.

It sounds great and I look forward to trying it. It just seems a little radical to be given a simple version increment from .5 to .6.

I applaud the efforts of the Core team. The Items that Mamba lists are the biggest things I see as moving the Xoops system forward. Now about that module framework...

If we look at how other CMS's make changes it would make sense to rename 2.6 as 3.0. I think we have gotten tied up in the idea that 3.0 would be a big change from the 2 Branch and perhaps Peekay is correct.

If however we look at the changes between branches it does fall in line with the incremental changes between branches.

2.1 and 2.2 are abandoned branches that were attempts to take xoops in different directions and since they were abandoned I won't include them...

2.3.3 was created to make xoops work with php5 and include some of the features attempted with 2.1 and 2.2.

2.4.5 Added some UI upgrades to the Admin menu and some security upgrades but really not that much changed to the base system.

2.5.5 is more of an update but again not much changed with the core.

2.6 is a major reworking of the core to update much of it and make it fully compliant with php5. By removing core items and making them plug ins this will encourage improved replacements much like PM and Profile have without needing them to be hacks to the core. This should be the biggest upgrade with Xoops since 2.3.3 but is not unlike the 2.3.3 upgrade.

So then we could talk about what it would take to make a 3.0 Branch but realistically I think a 3.0 Branch would be something where the technology changes much like the technology changed between xoops 1.0 and 2.0. With 3.0 the base structure of how things work with Xoops should change and it should be done from the ground up.

Correct. XOOPS 2.6.0 doesn't introduce any big changes from outside in, it only streamlines what we have inside Core.

Mamba, redheadedrod, and your other team developers, thank you very much!

Is there any planned date when XOOPS 2.6.0 beta be available? It seems that it now is in Alpha stage, right?

The size of 2.5.5. is large. Hope the coming 2.6 version will get slimmer and more eye-catching (Design wouldn't be ignored, I think).

I think XOOPS Taiwan (http://xoops.tn.edu.tw/ ) is great in making profits (not sure if it is great) from teaching, writing books about, web design using, and giving free forum discussion and free tutorial files of XOOPS. It has given many ways to spread the use of XOOPS and attract more users in the community of Taiwan and Hong Kong users.

Thank you very much!
