What is the number for the limit you face?

My guess is the limit is somewhere around 65k characters - I found the same problem in one of the wiki modules.

This isn't necessarily a XOOPS problem.......

I tought also about that limit, but this can be reduced by a factor 3 if UTF-8 is used with special characters. Abnd maybe some module specific restraints may apply.

It is the developer of the module who has choosen this limit, by configuration of the tables in the database.
However, this is sufficient for most posts. If you intend to publish an entire book in a single post on a forum or as a single page in a news or wiki section, then you are on the wrong way.
If it doesn't fit, it's time to split. (Pure poetry isn't it? )
Add a forward and backward link to the other pages and you are done.

If you are talking about normal text lines (80 characters), then this should not be a problem.
But if you use a lot of markup, also the hidden html tags can add up to a substantial amount.
Exported html documents from eg Word can easy double or triple the amount of characters by using a lot of repetitive useless tag and attribute specifications. (And especially if there are a lot of cells and/or tables in it, then it can be the ten fold.)

Disavantage of excel sheets is that it makes your info less accessable for a lot of users. Try to publicise in HTML as much as possible.
