for the appearance of the link in the side menu go to admin module administration and change the order of your forum module from 0 to something and click on submit at the bottom.

If the link in the top menu is not working, you are probably starting with a new theme. So you have to find the forum link in theme.html located in your current theme directory and complete it there.

It gives "Internal Server Error"

When you install module it appears in Main Menu automaticaly. Entire Main Menu is generated this way. If you need more flexibility with the menu, you may use "iMenu" or "MultiMenu" module...

Depending on the theme you may need to edit it for the horisontal menu.

To add external link you have few options:

1) use a menu module and build your menus.

2) edit the template for main menu and add link there.

3) try this one (I never used it): http://dev.xoops.org/modules/xfmod/project/?mainmenulink
