I haven't seen any options to turn this off so I guess editing the code is your possible solution. I don't know if this works but a quick look at the modules/pm/pmlite.php file starting around line 89:
$message = "quoten";
$message .= sprintf(_PM_USERWROTE,$pm_uname);
$message .= "n".$pm->getVar("msg_text", "E")."n/quote";
NOTE: I had to modify the above so it would display but the code looks like this except brackets around the word "quote". I could add it here because the forum keeps seeing it as a quote in the post.
Anyway you could try commenting out those three lines to see if that omits the automatic quoting but then that eliminates it for everyone if it does work. Be sure to backup any file before you modify.
If that doesn't work, I'll defer to the people here with much more experience.

I have had a good search and read some FAQs.. but haven't hit on what I am looking for if in the wong thread smack my wrists and re direct.
I am only testing my site at the momnt with 3 others all using diffeent browsers.. and we communicate via PMs .. and I am sick already of the constant automatic quoting of the message I am replying to .
For my sanity sake (at the moment) is there a way to turn these off or change the code. ?
