I always used XOOPS on live internet.

Is it possible to back up files from my hosting company onto a CD so I can run it onto my laptop? What about the database how would the files find the database?

If this is possible how do I go about it? I know I will have to copy all the files first.

Any ideas?
Ray

This software can be run from a Pendrive (USB flash drive)...
XSAS (XOOPS Standalone Server)

This tutorial explains the basic concepts of using XSAS to develop sites locally. These concepst can be applied to using XSAS on a Pendrive.
Using XSAS to develop multiple XOOPS sites locally

Since XOOPS needs to write to the filesystem, you won't be able to use a CD unless the CD is formatted in UDF and your CD drive is a burner. Also, using a UDF formatted CD will be slooooooow! You're better off to use a pendrive. A cheap 128MB drive would be enough.

Hope this helps.
