phpdebug option 'on' but no info displayed

occasionally I turn the phpdebug option on to check things out. Tried it today on my sites and no info is displayed. sql/blocks and smarty work ok.

Anyone know the cause and remedy for this?

Yeah, I thought wow! no notices or problems, then I realised, it wasnt working at all

Mmm, no obvious problems with the site, just no Phpdebug
