Cannot Connect to DB

This is my current setup:

Apache 2.0.52
PHP 4.3.10
MySQL 4.1.8 Essentials
MySQL Administrator 1.0.18
Xoops 2.0.9.1
Windows XP Pro SP2

I have already verfied that the webserver and PHP are working correctly. I created a database called XOOPS and created a user called XOOPS with password of xoops. When I try to connect to the DB during the setup wizard I get the famous "Could not connect to database server." error message. I searched through these forums, but really could not find a concrete answer as to what the resolution is. I found a few posts that sort of address it, but not in a very clear manner. Any help woud be appreciated. I am hoping to use XOOPS for a corporate intranet site. Any help is greatly appreciated. TIA

try using an IP address or computer name of the MySQL server as the host..

is MySQL compiled right? use a phpinfo() script on your server and call it from a browser to see if MySQL is listed.. just a thought

Ran a PHP info script and it seemed to detect MySQL fine. Responses from the script seemed normal.

Can you connect to the database manually with the same credentials using a tool like phpMyAdmin or MySQL Maestro?

I am currently using MySQL Administrator 1.0.18 and connect fine. I am assuming that is basically the same as Maestro (GUI admin program for MySQL).

Ok I tried phpMyAdmin and I am getting the following error:

#1251 - Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client

MySQL client? What exactly is that? I am using the latest verison of MySQL 4 (4.1.18).

change the setting in the config.inc.php file in the phpmyadmin folder

set authentication method to cookie and try again..

i had this problem before, and couldn't quite solve it either.. so i switched to using Xampp 1.4.10 all in one server and have had no probs since..

are you running apache, & sql as a windows service or standalone program?
