ummm...newbies please don't make this mistake

omg! where are all my photos

I was wondering this when I had some trouble editing pics in xcgallery...I FTP'd a heap of files and was struggling with editing them - they weren't showing and some batch uploads failed...and then

the lights came on

Now you experts are not allowed to laugh or give me a hard time - you must respect my L plates and remember I am a front end user not a programmer....

dear newbies of my kind

You must have no special characters in your file names

Now for us this is something totally new. We have been working with windows programs which allow us to create files like
jen's headache.doc
and
jen's break.jpg
and
jen's favourite pic.gif

HOWEVER

(DON'T LAUGH)

these files can't be read.
The above file names need to be change to
jensheadache.doc
jensbreak.jpg
jens_favourite_pic.gif

It's easy to do online in CPanel with your file manager...click on the file, select rename, type in the name with the correct file extension
or delete the offending files, rename them on your hard drive copy and upload them all over.

Question: Is it necessary to have no gaps in file names?

If anyone knows of a quick and easy way to convert file names to no gaps names - please tell me. I am about to spend an hour or more renaming files and folders!

Newbies - note the word folders...it goes for them too!
eg
jen's pics folder needs to become jenspics folder.

Hope this helps some other poor soul!

Cheers

Re: ummm...newbies please don't make this mistake

Please note: File name changes are easier with your FTP program than with C Panel - much faster!

vvvrrrrooooooommmm!
Cheers
