Hi All,

I've recently swapped ISP's and have also made quite a few changes in the way content is displayed on my site. About the only performance enhancment I can think of left to do (while still hosting at home) is to move to a fully CSS based theme/template system, and that isn't going to happen any time soon.

I'd really appreciate it if you could visit my site and just vote in my poll for how long the site took to load for you. Not the script process time displayed at the bottom, but the time taken from when you click on the link to when the site if fully loaded. Thanks so much .

Re: How fast does my site load for you?

Hi,

I checked with IBM page detailer and noticed the following:

Total time to get the page was: 12.26 seconds

The main part of your site loads in 4.5 seconds
xoops.css - 1.00 seconds
style.css - 1.02
xoops.js - 0.93
php-stats.js.php - 0.452797
block-title.gif - 0.85
clock.js - 0.47
logo.jpg - 1.24
ads - 0.16
certs.gif - 1.32
x-click-butcc-donate.gif - 0.40
awstats_misc_tracker.js - 0.58
awstats_misc_tracker.js - 0.54 (loads twice?)

Best wishes,

Martijn

Thanks for testing wtravel . 12.26 seconds is a bit of a bummer though . Where abouts are you coming from, and what type of connection do you have?

Re: How fast does my site load for you?

I live in Holland and have an ADSL connection. When I load my own site which is in the USA it loads in about 4 seconds, including a banner script which I think takes up too much time to load.

Other than your heavy content I think it would be worth the try to host your site somewhere with a good connection. I use CWIhosting.com and I am pretty content with them. Little downtime and a reasonable price for what you get. Make sure your domain is not hosted on one of their domain servers though, since it tends to be down more often than the hosting server(s). Just point the domain to the designated name servers.

If I am wrong and the long load time is caused by content alone, then I would really trim down your site on a couple of things. You can use tools to make your images smaller in size, check your scripts for unnecessary things etc.

Regards,

Martijn

I'd say get yourself a fast host, clean things up a little, and switch to a CSS theme and you'll be set. Just make sure you get a package with a lot of bandwidth. You're going to need it with that ranking.

I'm on 3MB+ Cable in West Virginia, US and your site still took over 6 seconds to load. Most sites take less than 3.

Thanks for the replies guys

I will be moving the site to a dedicated server in a datacenter at some stage, but I figure if I can get it performing well on a home DSL connection, then it should fly when hosted in a datacenter!

It's amazing how much lag is introduced as soon as you go outside Australia's borders. In the threads I've posted in the Australian forums I go to most people with broadband are fully loading up the site in and around 5 seconds, even most dial up users are loading it in around just over 10 seconds. But as soon as it goes international it seems there isn't much under 10 seconds, no matter what the bandwidth of the connecting client.

You could also try http://www.webhost4life.com/

I found this place by accident and it's got me seriously considering switching hosts. It's a tough call though because my current host (http://1and1.com/) offers three free domain names with the Business package and one really sweet cp for just $16US more. That, and I prefer Linux hosting. Anyway, if you're on a tight budget, http://www.webhost4life.com/ looks like a real good alternative.

whttp://www.site5.com is very good with all of the latest updates at $10 a month. If you want JSP on Tomcat I use http://www.liquidweb.com at $15. This is a very good forum for website testing and comparisons. http://www.webhostingtalk.com/

Should I delete some extra files out of the template directory for speed? I noticed I had some templates in there from no longer used themes.I don't cache anything.
